Independent Alarm was founded in 1978 by Paul Kerth and Scott Layman at a time when microprocessors and other technological advances were giving a new birth to the security and fire alarm industries. Centrally located on Haddon Avenue in Collingswood, New Jersey, the company gained its strong reputation by offering a wide variety of cost effective solutions to the growing demands of a vast residential and commercial customer base. Independent Alarm's well-known dedication to the highest standards of equipment and its proper application caused that customer base to rapidly accumulate through word of mouth and referrals. Its superior customer service was widely valued and highly recognized. At that time, professionally installed systems were generally more expensive and some customers chose the "do-it-yourself" option with the comfort of having reliable technical support if needed. Advances in communication technology led to an increase in reliable and cost effective 24-hour monitoring of customer alarm systems. As a truly full service company, Independent Alarm continued to grow and adapt to ever increasing changes in an industry becoming more regulated with fire and safety codes and the required state licensing of alarm companies. With the arrival of the new century, Independent Alarm accelerated the growth of its product and customer base with the acquisition of a few well-known local alarm companies and established a duplicate location in Marlton, New Jersey. By 2004, Paul's son Jamie had taken over company operations and eventually assumed full ownership when his father retired in 2009. Having finally outgrown its Collingswood landmark location, the company has since consolidated its entire operation into a larger office building located on Maple Avenue in Pennsauken, New Jersey.
