JRA had its origins when Mike Roberts was the staff psychologist for the San Jose Police Department and was also doing pre-employment psychological testing for a number of other police departments. In the course of these activities Dr. Roberts was developing innovative approaches to applicant selection and training, which included development of the San Jose Model Field Training Program which won the technology innovations award from the IACP in 1972. The basic "San Jose Model" has since been adopted by hundreds of police agencies throughout the US. Dr. Roberts asked Mike Johnson, who had a PhD in psychological testing and statistical analysis, to help him validate the selection and training models that he was developing, and to help develop computer programs to create specialized reports for the tests that he was using in his psychological screening practice. In 1986, this collaboration led the two of them to form Johnson, Roberts, and Associates, Inc. (JRA) for the purpose of providing the test reports that they were developing to public safety agencies and independent police psychologists throughout the United States. The first product developed was the Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) created for the California Highway Patrol in 1989. We now offer a comprehensive, affordable set of life history and psychological test reports that cover all essential aspects of pre-employment psychological evaluation of applicants for police, corrections, fire and other public safety positions. These reports can all be created using our integrated Test Scoring System software, which includes a database that allows all of the test data to be saved and used for research or documentation. JRA provides our test reports to over 100 police, corrections, fire, and other public safety agencies (including many of the largest agencies in the country as well as agencies in small cities and towns), and over 100 independent psychologists, throughout the country. In 2018, Mike Johnson stepped back from an active role with JRA and ...
