Leadership Spokane is the original organization, founded in 1982 by the Spokane Area Chamber of Commerce and a group of business and community leaders. Their goal was to ensure that the momentum and energy of the 1974 environmental Expo was carried forward and that new leaders would be nurtured and trained to serve the community. Leadership Spokane offers a civic leadership training program in which the voices of both the business and human communities are balanced, with the clear understanding that the health of both is vital to a healthy Spokane. 45 to 50 individuals from a variety of professions, races, backgrounds and neighborhoods from all over the county compose the class each year. Participants attend sessions from September through June and explore topics of relevance to the Spokane area. They examine current issues and meet with a broad spectrum of decision-makers. They find out what is happening in Spokane and why. In addition, participants enhance or learn new leadership skills.
