Madurai Agri-business Incubator Forum (MABIF) propose to extend the wings of its development catchment around 75 km circumference of Madurai that could effectively create a set of 8 rural transformation points of 25 km circumference that are administratively controllable. This geographical coverage can be defined as Madurai ABI catchment for the purpose of this proposal. The map below captures the basic Agro-climatic profile of the catchment. MABI represents an approximate net sown area of approximately 0.68 million Hectares and an irrigated area of nearly 0.4 million Hectares, wherein 2 million cultivators and 4 million agriculture labours coordinate agriculture production. The catchment also offers an opportunity with another one million acres of fallow and 0.8 million acres of forest cover. The catchment also throws threats in the form of overexploited ground water (70% 0f the sown area), average 840mm annual rainfall, which is 100mm lesser than the state average and a cropping intensity falling between 110-115. Land degradation issues like water erosion, sodicity and Pollution also acts a threat to the confidence of agriculture development. Although, the strengths are multi-fold, threats are propagated as discouragement among the cultivators and entrepreneurs, when the innate potential is far above the perceived threats. MABI finds a big opportunity to stretch the advocacy of entrepreneurship among them by showcasing the strengths and opportunities in MABI platform. MABI envisages value chain development approach to strengthen the natural micro clusters for a focused development and group farmers to persuade entrepreneurship.
