"We have our areas and specialties we focus on, but all of us are willing and ready to step in and help out if someone is swamped," Nelson says. "At the end of the day, we are all proud of what we've accomplished and the fact that our customers are taken care of. As long as our customers are successful, we're successful." When Johnson took over, Millborn Seeds was primarily in the wholesale business, providing retailers with superior quality grass seed. Building on the company's reputation for superior quality control and products, Johnson and the team began working directly with their customers. Today, Millborn's team of specialists provides customers -farmers, ranchers, hunters, conservation districts, construction companies, city parks departments - with in-depth information and hands-on assistance. "We are a progressive company who offers our customers knowledge and insight. We don't skim the surface. Our customers count on us to walk them through a project, from start to finish, and provide them with specific information to succeed," says Eric Mousel, Millborn's forage and alfalfa specialist and an adjunct professor of Animal Science and Range Science at South Dakota State University. Working at Millborn Seeds since 1992, Karen Langland has seen Millborn Seeds grow. Since 2002, the company has tripled their full-time staff and currently employs several part time South Dakota State University students. One reason for this growth, Langland notes, is how well the team readily adapts to change. "We're always looking for new and improved ways of doing things - whether that be a better variety of seed or a new way of implementing a management practice," says Millborn's finance manager. Johnson adds that Millborn's continued growth is because of who the team is. "We are a group of people who pour our heart and soul into everyone we serve and everything we do each day," Johnson says. Because what Ben Burris does daily is about ensuring each customer has the information they need to make their project successful, ...

What Skills Does a person Need at Millborn Seeds?

At Millborn Seeds, specify the abilities and skills that a person needs in order to carry out the specified job duties. Each competency has five to ten behavioral assertions that can be observed, each with a corresponding performance level (from one to five) that is required for a particular job.

  1. Logistics: In a general business sense, logistics is the management of the flow of things between the point of origin and the point of consumption to meet the requirements of customers or corporations.
  2. Customer Service: Customer service is the provision of service to customers before, during and after a purchase. The perception of success of such interactions is dependent on employees "who can adjust themselves to the personality of the guest". Customer service concerns the priority an organization assigns to customer service relative to components such as product innovation and pricing. In this sense, an organization that values good customer service may spend more money in training employees than the average organization or may proactively interview customers for feedback. From the point of view of an overall sales process engineering effort, customer service plays an important role in an organization's ability to generate income and revenue. From that perspective, customer service should be included as part of an overall approach to systematic improvement. One good customer service experience can change the entire perception a customer holds towards the organization.
  3. Leadership: Knowledge of and ability to employ effective strategies that motivate and guide other members within our business to achieve optimum results.
  4. warehouse operations: In its simplest form, “warehousing” is the storage of goods until they are needed. The goal of warehouse operations is to satisfy customers' needs and requirements while utilizing space, equipment, and labor effectively.
  5. Inventory Control: Inventory control or stock control can be broadly defined as "the activity of checking a shop’s stock." However, a more focused definition takes into account the more science-based, methodical practice of not only verifying a business' inventory but also focusing on the many related facets of inventory management (such as forecasting future demand) "within an organisation to meet the demand placed upon that business economically." Other facets of inventory control include supply chain management, production control, financial flexibility, and customer satisfaction. At the root of inventory control, however, is the inventory control problem, which involves determining when to order, how much to order, and the logistics (where) of those decisions. An extension of inventory control is the inventory control system. This may come in the form of a technological system and its programmed software used for managing various aspects of inventory problems , or it may refer to a methodology (which may include the use of technological barriers) for handling loss prevention in a business.
