R. A. Mercer & Co. was originally formed as a partnership between Raymond Mercer and Kenneth Webdale in July of 1973 with offices in the Ellicott Square Building. Within a year's time a third partner, Robert Irwin, with offices in Cattaraugus, joined the firm and thus the firm's presence in the southern tier was established. In the aftermath of flooding from 1971 Hurricane Agnes, federal aid poured into the areas affected and the firm began providing grant auditing services required by federal agencies. By 1986, when the Single Audit Act was enacted, the firm had several years of federal grant auditing experience. This was the impetus for the firm's development of an expertise in governmental auditing and accounting. The downtown Buffalo office relocated to suburban Orchard Park and after the death of founding partner, Raymond Mercer in 1983, the firm incorporated and R. A. Mercer & Co., P.C. was formed with Robert Irwin as managing partner. Over the next several years the firm's southtowns presence increased, adding offices in Sardinia, Springville, and Orchard Park. The Orchard Park office has since relocated to West Seneca. What started out as a two-man partnership is now a majority women owned firm that includes the daughter of founding partner Ray Mercer among its six partners. While the firm has grown over the years and developed expertise in many areas we have always remained focused on providing the highest quality services at reasonable rates.
