Shaws is one of the oldest continuously-operated supermarkets in the United States. Its New England roots were planted firmly in May of 1860, when George Clinton Shaw opened a small retail grocery store, located at 285 Middle Street in Portland, Maine. The store stocked 100 items, most of which were not available from local farmers. In 1919, Mainer Maynard A. Davis moved to Massachusetts, founding a group of small downtown grocery stores in the Brockton and New Bedford areas called Brockton Public Markets, or BPM stores. These entrepreneurs showed the seeds that would one day becomeShaws Supermarkets, Inc. In later 1919, Davis purchased the George C. Shaw Company of Portland, Maine, choosing to operate the two grocers independently. Over the past 150 years, the growth of Shawscan be attributed directly to the ingenuity of these pioneering grocers, and their core value of offering unparalleled service and quality products. In 1941, both Shaws and BPM stores adopted a bold new business model, converting to self-service grocery. In 1948, Shaws/BPM instituted the New England Food Buyers Association, a member-owned food co-op, to stay competitive with the house brands offered by large grocery chains. This association would later become Topco associates of Chicago. Throughout the 1950s, Shaws/BPM markets kept pace with grocers across the United States, building and anchoring some of New Englands first shopping centers in Portland, Maine and Brockton, Massachusetts. By 1965, the company expanded, opening new Shaws locations in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The 1970s were an era of unprecedented growth and expansion, adding larger distribution centers with greater capacity and scanning cash registers to provide shoppers greater convenience and expediency. In 1979, George C. Shaw & Company officially merged with BPM to form Shaws Supermarkets, Inc. The 1980s saw Shaws Supermarkets Inc. continuing to expand, opening new, larger-capacity distribution centers and more locations to serve New England shoppers. Historic ...

What Skills Does a person Need at Shaw's?

At Shaw's, specify the abilities and skills that a person needs in order to carry out the specified job duties. Each competency has five to ten behavioral assertions that can be observed, each with a corresponding performance level (from one to five) that is required for a particular job.

  1. Customer Service: Customer service is the provision of service to customers before, during and after a purchase. The perception of success of such interactions is dependent on employees "who can adjust themselves to the personality of the guest". Customer service concerns the priority an organization assigns to customer service relative to components such as product innovation and pricing. In this sense, an organization that values good customer service may spend more money in training employees than the average organization or may proactively interview customers for feedback. From the point of view of an overall sales process engineering effort, customer service plays an important role in an organization's ability to generate income and revenue. From that perspective, customer service should be included as part of an overall approach to systematic improvement. One good customer service experience can change the entire perception a customer holds towards the organization.
  2. Food Safety: Applying procedures during food preparation, processing, storage, and distribution to ensure consumers are safe from foodborne illnesses.
  3. WFM: Workforce management (WFM) is the way in which employers strategically allocate people and resources, track attendance and comply with constantly changing workplace laws and regulations.
  4. Merchandising: In the broadest sense, merchandising is any practice which contributes to the sale of products to a retail consumer. At a retail in-store level, merchandising refers to the variety of products available for sale and the display of those products in such a way that it stimulates interest and entices customers to make a purchase. In the profession of merchandising you are either employed by the store in which you work, or by an independent distributor. As a professional merchandiser, in a retail setting, you will not only know your products(I.e. coffee, juice, soda, etc.) but you will gauge other “vendors” like products as you tend to your job. Working with the store and other merchandisers, shelf space is often given or taken as need be in some locations(for some young merchandisers this is known as “war”) In retail commerce, visual display merchandising means merchandise sales using product design, selection, packaging, pricing, and display that stimulates consumers to spend more. This includes disciplines and discounting, physical presentation of products and displays, and the decisions about which products should be presented to which customers at what time.
  5. Packaging: Preparing products through wrapping or bottling to protect the goods from damages during transportation and storage.
