Surrounded by the natural beauty of a protected tidal cove, bustling Rowayton Harbor, and beautifully landscaped homes & estates, the Club has always been a treasured retreat from the demands of daily life. Originally started as a summer colony in 1890, the property enabled families to spend the summer in the country with the pleasures of the seashore, while living at the nearby Tokeneke Inn. The Club was incorporated in 1907, featuring tennis on the single doubles court, swimming in the Sound, bathing on the beach and season long social activities, all of which continue today. Over the years the Club has weathered fires, hurricanes and nor-easters. The membership has seen five variations on the main Clubhouse, with the sixth completed in 2008; the building of eight more tennis courts over time; the addition of a 25 meter swimming pool and diving well, and the beachside cabana building in 1959; a new bathhouse facility in 1983; along with the addition of paddle tennis, sailing, water polo, diving, swimming and children's camp added to the busy summer activity schedule. In 2007, we celebrated our Centennial; 100 years of history, memories and fond recollections of special moments with family and friends. We have come a long way from our simple beginnings, but one thing has never changed ~ Tokeneke is and always will be a family Club, with emphasis on family fun. The cove echoes with the joy and laughter of generations of Club members who have spent their leisure hours, shared many talents, and made lifelong friendships here. We look forward to many more happy years on these "shining shores". The Tokeneke Club
