Voces is a warm and inviting space where the Latino/Hispanic community of Greater Battle Creek can come together and receive empowering and holistic support in several different ways. Our name means, which means "voices" in Spanish, was chosen following a community contest held in early 2010 and we believe it represents our mission and goal of "Many Voices, One Community." Voces (formerly Latino/Hispanic Community Project) began in 2007 with the creation of an Advisory Council, a small group of dedicated Latinos/Hispanics interested in improving the health, quality of life, and leadership of Latinos/Hispanics in Greater Battle Creek. It began operations in May 2008 as a Community Project Fund of the Battle Creek Community Foundation. Over the last few years, Voces has grown tremendously and has expanded its staff, services, and programs. Currently, Voces has four main programs that help carry out our mission. Each program offers a wide array of services and initiatives that forwards the goal of each respective program and Voces' mission. The four programs and their goals are as follows: Language Services: To improve systems for language access and culturally responsive services in Battle Creek. Family Education: To increase the self-sufficiency and educational attainment of Latino/Hispanic families. Youth & Parent Engagement: To increase post-secondary education opportunities and high school graduation for Latino/Hispanic youth. Community Connections: To strengthen the supportive networks and services that Latino/Hispanic families need to ensure family and child well-being.

What Skills Does a person Need at Voces?

At Voces, specify the abilities and skills that a person needs in order to carry out the specified job duties. Each competency has five to ten behavioral assertions that can be observed, each with a corresponding performance level (from one to five) that is required for a particular job.

  1. Child Care: Child care, otherwise known as day care, is the care and supervision of a child or multiple children at a time, whose ages range from six weeks to thirteen years. Child care is the action or skill of looking after children by a day-care center, nannies, babysitter, teachers or other providers. Child care is a broad topic that covers a wide spectrum of professionals, institutions, contexts, activities, and social and cultural conventions. Early child care is an equally important and often overlooked component of child development. Child care providers can be children's first teachers, and therefore play an integral role in systems of early childhood education. Quality care from a young age can have a substantial impact on the future successes of children. The main focus of childcare is on the development of the child, whether that be mental, social, or psychological. In most cases children are taken care of by their parents, legal guardians, or siblings. In some cases, it is also seen that children care for other children. This informal care includes verbal direction and other explicit training regarding the child's behavior, and is often as simple as "keeping an eye out" for younger siblings. Care facilitated by similar-aged children covers a variety of developmental and psychological effects in both caregivers and charge. This is due to their mental development being in a particular case of not being able to progress as it should be at their age. This care giving role may also be taken on by the child's extended family. Another form of childcare that is on the rise in contrast to familial caregiving is that of center-based child care. In lieu of familial care giving, these responsibilities may be given to paid caretakers, orphanages or foster homes to provide care, housing, and schooling.
  2. child development: Child development refers to the sequence of physical, language, thought and emotional changes that occur in a child from birth to the beginning of adulthood.
  3. CPR: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) combines rescue breathing (mouth-to-mouth) and chest compressions to temporarily pump enough blood to the brain until specialized treatment is available.
  4. Early Childhood Education: Early childhood education, also known as nursery education, is a branch of education theory that relates to the teaching of children from birth up to the age of eight.
  5. Professional development: Professional development refers to continuing education and career training after a person has entered the workforce in order to help them develop new skills, stay up-to-date on current trends, and advance their career.
