The Waialae Asahi Japanese School (WAJS) is an established learning institution with a very experienced teaching staff. It is one of nine schools in the Hawaii Kyooikukai, a statewide group of Japanese language school programs. WAJS offers the only kindergarten through ninth-grade after-school Japanese language program in Hawaii. Classes are held Monday through Friday at Waialae Elementary Public Charter School (WEPCS) as an after-school program. Classes are 50 minutes in length; start time is determined by grade level. Teacher-student ratio is small to maximize learning. Skills taught are reading and writing of hiragana, katakana, and kan'ji; listening and reading comprehension; conversation; and Japanese culture. In addition to language instruction, class activities include celebrating and observing Japanese children's holidays/festivals, singing, participating in an annual un'dookai (picnic and field day), joining other Japanese Language School students in traveling to Japan (a program offered every other year during spring break), as well as taking part in an end-of-year graduation ceremony and gakugeikai (grade-level student performances).
