WEAA 88.9 is the NPR affiliated public radio station of Morgan State University, and a service of the universitys School of Global Journalism and Communication. Broadcasting since 1977, WEAA 88.9 operates free from commercial influence and attracts supports from members, underwriters, and grant-makers. The stations 24-hour format features a range of music programs, including jazz, R&B, neo-soul, reggae, hip-hop, and gospel. WEAA also provides locally produced news, including coverage from student journalists and from NPR. Its talk and news feature shows include NPRs 1A and Latino USA, along with WEAA produced Today with Dr. Kaye, hosted by Kaye Wise Whitehead. WEAA 88.9 began broadcasting on January 10, 1977, with call letters standing for "We Educate African Americans."
