Dear Westbrook Public Schools Community, I am delighted and honored to be back in Westbrook to support the school district as you search for your next superintendent. Although many of the faces have changed since my tenure as superintendent 8 years ago, I have many fond memories and relationships I look forward to rekindling. Westbrook is a special place and I intend to continue your efforts to ensure educational excellence is at the forefront of our work. There is much to do in the upcoming weeks as we prepare for the reopening of schools this fall. Last week the Governor announced that we will plan for all students to return full-time for the opening of school. We will follow appropriate health and safety measures and work closely with our state and local health officials to put an initial plan in place to accomplish this goal. Governor Lamont and Commissioner Cardona were clear that we must also be prepared to act on a contingency plan in the event the cases of coronavirus escalate. The safety and health of our students and staff is our first priority. Our administrative team has started working on these plans. A template and guidelines were provided on Monday and they will be our guideposts. (See link to Executive Summary below.) I know teachers and staff are anxious to see their students again and, like you, want to know the details of these design plans. I ask for everyones patience regarding the specifics of Westbrooks strategies as we assess and adapt our learning environment to meet the State Department of Educations expectations. Additional information will be forthcoming as we look to address the many details of how to best reopen our classrooms to students. These are challenging times and the State Department aptly stated, Flexibility will be the only constant. The Westbrook Board of Education invites the Westbrook community to participate in the search process for a new Superintendent of Schools. During the week of June 22nd, Mary Broderick and Paul Gagliarducci, CABE Search Services Consultants ...

What Skills Does a person Need at Westbrook Public Schools?

Each competency has five to ten behavioral assertions that can be observed, each with a corresponding performance level (from one to five) that is required for a particular job.

  1. Child Care: Child care, otherwise known as day care, is the care and supervision of a child or multiple children at a time, whose ages range from six weeks to thirteen years. Child care is the action or skill of looking after children by a day-care center, nannies, babysitter, teachers or other providers. Child care is a broad topic that covers a wide spectrum of professionals, institutions, contexts, activities, and social and cultural conventions. Early child care is an equally important and often overlooked component of child development. Child care providers can be children's first teachers, and therefore play an integral role in systems of early childhood education. Quality care from a young age can have a substantial impact on the future successes of children. The main focus of childcare is on the development of the child, whether that be mental, social, or psychological. In most cases children are taken care of by their parents, legal guardians, or siblings. In some cases, it is also seen that children care for other children. This informal care includes verbal direction and other explicit training regarding the child's behavior, and is often as simple as "keeping an eye out" for younger siblings. Care facilitated by similar-aged children covers a variety of developmental and psychological effects in both caregivers and charge. This is due to their mental development being in a particular case of not being able to progress as it should be at their age. This care giving role may also be taken on by the child's extended family. Another form of childcare that is on the rise in contrast to familial caregiving is that of center-based child care. In lieu of familial care giving, these responsibilities may be given to paid caretakers, orphanages or foster homes to provide care, housing, and schooling.
  2. child development: Child development refers to the sequence of physical, language, thought and emotional changes that occur in a child from birth to the beginning of adulthood.
  3. CPR: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) combines rescue breathing (mouth-to-mouth) and chest compressions to temporarily pump enough blood to the brain until specialized treatment is available.
  4. Early Childhood Education: Early childhood education, also known as nursery education, is a branch of education theory that relates to the teaching of children from birth up to the age of eight.
  5. Professional development: Professional development refers to continuing education and career training after a person has entered the workforce in order to help them develop new skills, stay up-to-date on current trends, and advance their career.
