In the early 1920s, the late Walter and Ernestine Rawl started a local small crop farm known as the Walter P. Rawl Farm. Using a horse and buggy, Walter would deliver produce to the local market in Columbia, SC. This journey would take at least two days from the farm location in Gilbert, SC. The business evolved into a larger farm selling greens and specialty vegetables. In 1960, the company hired their first full-time truck drivers. At that time, the trailers had an ice bunker with an air-cooled engine and squirrel fan blowing over it to keep the fresh produce cool as the vegetables were delivered to customers in SC and NC. In the early 70s, WP Rawl transitioned to a trailer with a Transicold unit which sat underneath to keep the fresh produce cool. Since that time, the company has continued to invest in building their own fleet and currently has 85 Freightliner trucks and over 120 utility trailers serving their customers. WP Rawl has become one of the leading employers of truck drivers in South Carolina, with over 80 drivers on staff and several independent drivers working exclusively for the company.
