Histology Technician receives and prepares tissue specimens for routine and special procedures and pathologist review. Performs histological procedures including accessioning, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining. Being a Histology Technician maintains accurate tissue and slide records. Cleans and maintains instruments and work areas. Additionally, Histology Technician complies with established laboratory policies for universal precautions and safety. Requires an associate degree in biology, related science, or equivalent. Typically requires completion of an accredited histotechnology program. Requires ASCP Histotechnician certification (HT). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Histology Technician's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under limited supervision performs routine techniques on surgical, autopsy, and
research tissue according to standardized procedures. Operates and maintains
laboratory instruments and equipment required to perform analysis.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Cuts surgical, autopsy, research and neuropathology tissue using a rotary
microtome.
2. Embeds surgical, autopsy, research, and neuropathology tissue.
3. Stains, coverslips and labels surgical, autopsy, research and neuropathology
tissue.
4. Under supervision, performs special stains according to standardized
procedures.
5. Maintains all equipment and instruments. May demonstrate work to help
onboard others.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
1. (a.) Completion of an Associate’s Degree with coursework in Anatomy, Biology,
and/or Chemistry, OR
(b.) Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree program in medical technology, medical
laboratory sciences, clinical laboratory sciences, Chemistry, Microbiology, or
Biology, OR
(c.) A high school diploma or GED with two years of relevant laboratory
experience in a work, academic, or volunteer capacity.
2. Coursework completed outside of the US must be verified as by a NACES
approved credential evaluation service.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:
1. HT(ASCP) certification preferred
