    Description of Job

    Work Unit:
    The Colorado Department of Agriculture's Conservation Board program provides technical expertise and administrative functions necessary to promote natural resources conservation on private lands. It offers administrative, financial, and technical support to the state's 74 local conservation districts as they implement their local plans of work conserving the natural resources of Colorado's working landscapes. It also coordinates various programs with state and federal agencies on natural resource issues and assists districts on urban agriculture, forestry, water and energy programs.

    Position:
    The Urban Ag Specialist provides technical assistance and serves as a liaison to farmers, ranchers, and other conservation organizations, state and federal agencies on issues related to urban agriculture and stewardship, along with the protection of natural resources. This position is funded by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Agriculture Management funding pool. This position interacts with NRCS, conservation districts and local partners daily. Contributes to planning and implementation of conservation practices especially as they pertain to improving urban agriculture. The position also assists the 74 conservation districts in implementing voluntary soil health and water quality programs; participates in grant development and distribution, on-farm demonstration, fostering collaboration around urban agriculture, and develops educational, and training opportunities that serve farmers and ranchers. This position will focus collaboration with NRCS and Colorado State University's Small Acreage Coordinators as well as Conservation Districts, Nonprofits, and producers.

    The position represents CDA as a recognized urban ag expert and advisor to conservation districts, organizations, and committees for the purpose of explaining urban agriculture policy and broad agency mission.

    Duty: Urban Agriculture Program Management
    Brief Duty Description:
    • Develop goals, objectives, and strategies for the program by identifying current and future issues effecting urban agriculture in Colorado.
    • Assists the public and provides clear and accurate information and direction regarding urban agriculture stewardship.
    • Act as the spokesperson and subject matter expert on urban agriculture for the Department of Agriculture.
    • Oversee budget planning; grant writing; and as the program grows supervision of potential urban ag program employees.
    • Collaborate with local partners such as conservation districts, non-profits, school, and youth organizations to ensure urban agriculture program is meeting local and statewide needs.
    • Coordinate urban ag conservation policies to ensure activities between watersheds and conservation districts are implemented.
    • Provide connection and support for Colorado producers to access Federal, State or Local assistance programs for their operations.

    Duty: Federal Program Collaboration
    Brief Duty Description:
    • Serve as program leader and resource to district employees and supervisors throughout Colorado conservation districts to connect urban ag producers to federal resources.
    • Operate with the Federal Urban Ag office in Broomfield various programs related to the Urban Ag field, including landowner planning framework with landowners.
    • Attend conservation district board meetings, annual meetings, and watershed events to provide updates and training on implementing the Urban Ag framework.
    • Provide leadership and collaboration on development of urban ag training materials, documents, assessment procedures, technical policy, and outreach.
    • Position will need to make sure our guidance and practices are scientifically relevant.

    Duty: Outreach and Education Brief Duty Description:
    • In close coordination with the CSCB and Communications team, implement Urban Ag communication/stakeholder outreach activities.
    • Create, research, and edit or draft conservation/regenerative agriculture messages, talking points, newsletters, and fact sheets.
    • Work closely with the Communications team to advance statewide promotional and educational campaigns to advance conservation districts, urban agriculture, and food systems in Colorado.
    • Implement consistent formatting to be used for CDA documents and publications.
    • Research, design, write, edit, and/or proofread department documents, publications, and podcasts to be distributed to stakeholders.
    • Organize and create advertising, marketing and/or public relations campaigns for various outreach strategies. Work with other organizations on promotions to build and strengthen relationships.
    • Draft media releases for review by Communications Director, as needed. Work with staff to research, gather, and compile information for reference materials or for distribution/publication.

    Minimum Requirements:
    Proven Skills and Experience
    • Seven (7) Years experience in Agriculture as it relates to Urban Distribution and Urban Agricultural non-profits occupational field related to the work assigned to the position. Experience must include:
      • One (1) year of understanding a controlled farm operation as it relates to urban agriculture.
    OR
    Education and Experience
    • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in institution in Agriculture, Agri-Business, Public Administration, Horticulture.
    • Three years of professional full-time as listed above.
      • One (1) year of understanding a controlled farm operation as it relates to urban agriculture
