Join our team as a Shelter Animal Care Associate and make a difference in the lives of animals in need. This role involves providing care, support, and assistance to animals within our shelter environment.
This includes but is not limited to observing animal appearance and activity for general physical condition, observe signs of illnesses, disease, and discontent. The responsibilities may vary based on the current needs of the shelter.

Responsibilities:
· Cleans, disinfects, and maintains cages, kennels, lifestyle rooms, quarantine areas, animal runs, and designated Animal Care areas, in such a manner as to provide a germ-free, odorless, and low stress environment for the animals. Washes and disinfects food and water bowls regularly, including but not limited to animal supplies such as crates, carriers etc.
· Feeds animals according to feeding guidelines and/or recommended special diets recommended by the Veterinarian and/or medical team and provides daily care for all the animal residents in the shelter's care. Cleans, bathes (non-medically), and brushes animals, only as directed by management.
· Ensures animals are cared for daily; that includes, but not limited to, feeding the appropriate diets, providing clean drinking water, providing bedding/toys, and routinely walking the dogs.
· Handles and safely controls animals admitted to the shelter by the Humane Society of Greater Miami. This may include, from time to time, difficult to handle, unsocialized, or fearful animals.
· Reports to the Animal Care Management any potential behavioral concerns involving the animals in the organization's care and promptly reports any potential health concerns to the medical team.
· Knows all the animals by name and treats each one of them with love and respect.
· Immediately reports any safety hazards or unsafe usage of Humane Society of Greater Miami’s equipment and supplies to Animal Care Management.
· Performs general housekeeping duties such as sweeping, mopping, cleaning windows, borders, paper towel and hand sanitizer dispensers, door frames, and handling laundry in quarantine building.
· Restocks individual areas with appropriate supplies used on a regular basis.
· Performs daily assigned tasks such as: Maintain and upkeep storage areas, outdoor dog waste stations, maintain dog parks free of feces/debris, restock outdoor animal care supplies.
· Other duties as assigned by Animal Care Management.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED), and six months experience working with animals is strongly preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires some knowledge of animal handling skills, animal behavior, and animal care. Must not be afraid of or be uncertain of cats or dogs, or be allergic to cats or dogs.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, interpret, and comprehend simple instructions. Ability to effectively present information to co-workers and the public. Must speak and understand basic English.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
· The employee must regularly lift, move and control (properly handle) animals weighing up to 50 pounds, or food/litter products weighing up to 50 pounds, and must occasionally lift, move and control (properly handle) animals weighing upwards of 100 pounds (with reasonable assistance).
· The employee must be able to stand on their feet for multiple hours a day, walk in both indoor and outdoor settings, and function in a fast-paced environment. Position requires prolonged standing, walking, reaching, twisting, and turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping.
