    The Government Records Archivist position collects, appraises, accessions, arranges, describes, and provides for the preservation and storage for government records of the state and region according to archival best practices to ensure they are available for public use.

    Duties include: appraising incoming collections for historical and research value; processing and accessioning collections; performing basic conservation treatments; adding collection information into ArchivesSpace; providing reference services on a rotational basis for the entire archives collection including manuscripts, government records, maps, photographs, and audio/visual materials; promoting the archives through special events and outreach services; conducting historical research on state agencies, board and commissions; and preparing and delivering presentations about the archives collections.

    This is a full-time permanent position.     The Government Records Archivist will report to the State Archivist and will be working with archival materials which includes exposure to dust and mold. Applicant must be able to lift boxes weighing up to 50 lbs. and climb ladders. Some travel is required and therefore a valid driver's license is required.     The Ideal Candidate Will Have

    • Master's degree with archival coursework or advanced degree in an allied discipline combined with two years of relevant processing experience in a government archives;
    • experience providing reference services using primary source materials;
    • experience with ArchivesSpace;
    • experience with Microsoft 365 applications;
    • experience arranging and describing archival collections of varying sizes and formats;
    • ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks and to work effectively, both independently and collaboratively, in a dynamic environment with a diverse group of colleagues and external stakeholders;
    • excellent interpersonal, organizational, written, and oral communication skills;
    • demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and a commitment to professional engagement and continuous learning;
    • comfort with and ability to learn new technologies;
    • commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive workplace, and an ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholder communities;
    • experience working with restricted government records.

    The Work Requires Considerable Knowledge Of

    • archival theory, standards, and best practices and their implementation (includes an understanding of appraisal methods, arrangement and description, cataloging, preservation, access, and outreach);
    • state and federal law as it pertains to archival collections;
    • the organization and workings of state and local government;
    • United States and South Dakota history.

    Skill To

    • prioritize day to day tasks;
    • expand professional expertise by attending professional conferences and workshops and engaging in continuing education opportunities to maintain required skills;
    • contribute to the archival profession, whether through professional organizations or other efforts relevant to the job;
    • supervise temporary/hourly assistants, interns, or volunteers;
    • participate in on-site reference rotation answering in-person and remote reference questions based on subject expertise and knowledge of the collections.

    Ability To

    • arrange, analyze, and describe complex archival collections;
    • exhibit excellent organizational skill;
    • communicate both simple and complex ideas both orally and in writing, to people with various degrees of knowledge of archival theories and historical research methods;
    • work independently and as part of a team;
    • travel to pick up and deliver records from donors;
    • conduct site visits to historical organizations and collecting institutions to provide technical advice and assistance on archival practices and preservation issues upon request;
    • prepare monthly status reports;
    • develop and maintain working relationships with representatives in local and state government agencies;
    • commit to providing quality public service;
    • conduct research in response to reference requests;
    • successfully assist researchers while maintaining a professional demeanor;
    • participate in communication efforts to inform the public about the state archives and it's collections through presentations, social media posts and press releases.
