    Position Summary:
    The Coordinator of Campus Recreation/Assistant Coach is primarily responsible for two main roles:
    Direction, supervision, staffing, and event planning for the Sparks Center (50% of the responsibility).
    Support an athletic sports team as an Assistant Coach (50% of the responsibility).

    Under the supervision of the Director of Campus Recreation, the Coordinator of Campus Recreation/Assistant Coach is primarily responsible for the oversight of the Sparks Center as well as serving as an assistant athletics coach. The person in this role will focus on a student centered approach focused on learning outcomes and development. The Coordinator will aim to be intentional, collaborative, and driven to make this the best experience for the campus community.

    Candidates interested in this position will split time (50/50) managing the Sparks Center within the Willamette University Campus Recreation Department. This space includes the Sparks Fitness Center, Henkle recreational gym (2 courts), the Sparks Aquatics Program (2 pools 1 indoor and 1 outdoor), Sparks Field, Cone Field House, and multipurpose rooms for fitness classes and personal recreation. The person in this role will manage all the student staffing and leadership development, memberships, safety and risk and management of the space and the overall management of the facility. The person will manage their time to support an Athletic team as an Assistant Coach (50%). The person's interests in coaching could align within tennis (M&W), soccer (M), volleyball (W), or golf (M&W). The Assistant Coach will support practices, competitions, recruitment, player development both on and off the court/field, and will include some travel.

    This will be a full-time hourly position with benefits (30 hours a week). During the season this person will be responsible for balancing the hours to manage and support both roles. During the season it is anticipated hours will be focused and shifted to afternoon, evening, and weekend work. Then off season more Monday-Friday afternoon and evenings. Overall, hourly work schedules can be adapted and flexible.

    JOB DESCRIPTION

    The duties and responsibilities of the Coordinator of Campus Recreation/Assistant Coach are, but not limited to, the following functions, which are not listed in any particular order of significance:

    Supervision
    • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise a student facilities front desk and aquatics staff to provide administrative assistance, membership management, risk management, cleaning, and programming for the Sparks Center.
    • Assist in the hiring, development, and an annual review process of students for numerous positions within the Sparks Center.

    Administration
    • Oversee facility scheduling for student organization and community events in partnership with the Office of Scheduling, Events, & Conferences and the Department of Athletics.
    • Staff a front desk to support Sparks Center membership services that includes membership management with supporting financial transactions; customer service; a cleaning routine and risk management rounds of the space; maintaining a point of sale customer service software and waiver system for memberships and equipment rental.
    • Coordinate the annual maintenance contract for all cardio and weight training equipment.
    • Collaborate with facilities and custodial services to maintain the complex infrastructure and cleaning protocols.
    • Track semesterly and annual statistics, usage, and highlights.
    • Maintain department website and social media presence
    • Assist in planning and arranging team meals and travel logistics.
    • Participate in recruitment and retention of student-athletes.
    • Assist in the marketing, recruitment, and attendance of select Willamette University sports camps and clinics.

    Assistant Coaching
    • Assist the Head Coach in the planning, development, and execution of all programs and activities of the sports program.
    • Assist in the execution of practices, games, and other competitive and training programs and events.
    • Instruct and coach the fundamental principles and techniques of the specific sports skills (i.e. competition, traditions, and sportsmanship) as well as the philosophy of the sport.
    • Coordinate and assist in scouting, film exchange, and film breakdown, if applicable.
    • Assist in the recruitment of qualified prospective student-athletes for admission to a demanding academic environment.



    Program Planning
    • Assist in the development of events, programming, and workshops within Campus Recreation to support the mission of Student Affairs and Willamette University.
    • Create passive and active programming around health and wellness initiatives.
    • Continue to grow and develop the "Lift Up" programming collaboration with the Gender Resource and Advocacy Center (GRAC).



    Department/Divisional Leadership
    • Initiate, plan, and implement new programs or services aimed at meeting student needs and department goals in conjunction with the Director of Campus Recreation and the Athletic Director.
    • Establish and maintain strong partnerships with colleagues within the Student Affairs division Respect and maintain confidentiality, parameters of operation, professional protocols, and individual privacy.
    • Participate in new student recruitment and orientation events.
    • Assist both programs in assessment of student learning outcome initiatives based on the curricular model.
    • Mentor, develop, and support our students' holistic development. Some examples are health and wellbeing, leadership experience, and many other personal growth areas. This also includes advising in academic, disciplinary and personal matters as needed.
    • Demonstrate commitment to expand knowledge and awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion, understanding cultural differences, social identities, and historical inequities and strategies for interacting with people different from oneself and providing support and advocacy for diverse communities, including program and services delivery within this lens.



    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    • Bachelor's Degree in Recreation, Education, Sports Management, Exercise Science, or related field.
    • Demonstrated strong professionalism, leadership, organizational skills, and a strong work ethic experience with a collegiate or community recreation program.
    • Experience in one or more areas: facility operations, membership development, group fitness, aquatics.
    • Knowledge of use and maintenance of various recreational, weights, and fitness equipment.
    • Knowledge and experience in employee hiring, supervision, training, and staff mentorship and development.
    • Collegiate playing experience, at least two years of coaching, or equivalent experience.
    • Ability to effectively teach and coach students in both an individual and team setting.
    • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations and adherence to the philosophy and ideals of Willamette University and Division III athletics.
    • CPR, First Aid, and AED certification or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Knowledge in the Google platform and other major social media sites.
    • Knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion concerns of underserved populations attending the university.
    • Ability to work independently as well as establish and maintain harmonious relations with other staff, faculty and students.
    • Ability to travel and work evenings and weekends as required.
    • Knowledge of risk management and best practices both in Campus Recreation and Athletics.
    • Ability to reside in Oregon by the first day of employment or otherwise perform work primarily in Oregon.
