    Job Duties

    The attorney filling this position will join the Real Estate and Land Use Unit, serving as counsel to the Virginia Department of Transportation for real estate, land use, and eminent domain issues. The work for this position will include varied transactional, litigation and appellate work. Appellate work will involve review of eminent domain trial case files, legal research and drafting of appellate documents, and some appellate argument. Litigation work will involve supervising the work of outside counsel in reviewing and responding to lawsuits, including legal research and analysis of defenses. Some court appearances in real estate and land use litigation throughout the Commonwealth may be required. Transactional work includes contract review, advice on land use issues, and real estate work such as title review and certification, assistance with capital outlay transactions or other right of way or utility matters. The attorney will be responsible for working with a team on each project, including outside counsel, eminent domain coordinators, land survey reviewers, and executives. This position is located in Richmond (with flexibility for hybrid work) and reports to the Unit Manager as well as the Chief of the Transportation and Construction Section. As with all positions, other duties as necessary or appropriate may also be assigned. Some overnight travel may be required.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas: (i) negotiating and drafting documents for and closing general real estate transactions and related matters (sales, purchases, leases and easements with right of way matters); (ii) familiarity with title, survey, and general real estate matters; (iii) reviewing, drafting, and advising clients regarding eminent domain matters; and (iv) experience in litigation and/or appellate work.
    • Candidates should have a history of advising clients on real estate matters, with an emphasis on the ability to communicate well with individuals at all levels of understanding regarding legal issues.
    • Candidates must have excellent written and oral communication skills and be able to work well within a small team of professionals.
    • The qualified individual must be eligible to be admitted to the Virginia State Bar.
