Since 2001, Fred Hutch has led an array of distinctive research activities in partnership with colleagues in South Africa to accelerate the development of a preventive HIV vaccine and improve the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of cancer and infectious diseases worldwide. In 2013, Fred Hutch opened the state-of-the-art Cape Town HVTN Immunology Laboratory (CHIL) to serve as a base for HIV vaccine trials, and more recently COVID-19 vaccine trials, in South Africa.
The Laboratory Facilities Officer reports to the Laboratory Operations Manager, and is responsible for overseeing the laboratory’s physical facilities as part of the laboratory operations team, working in an international collaborative environment and ensuring quality standards are met. The Laboratory Facilities Officer oversees the function of the building systems and equipment, manages relevant service providers and relationships, ensuring compliance with Service Level Agreements. A hands-on approach is taken with mechanical, electrical, and other building systems and equipment.
