    STATUS: Full Time, Exempt

    PRIMARY FUNCTION:

    Utilizing leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, the Destinations Counselor oversees the implementation of the Destinations Program. Through the Destinations Program, the Career Counselor will provide educational, personal, and vocational counseling to Boy & Girls Club members and coordinate all available resources to empower students to reach their full potential.

    KEY ROLES:

    The essential job function and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

    Youth Development

    • Provide effective guidance and role modeling to members and help members resolve problems and conflicts.
    • Encourage positive reinforcement.

    Program Development & Implementation

    • Oversee the Destinations Program; update and maintain short- and long-term plans based on student needs and goals.
    • Create and cultivate community collaborations with outside agencies in order to recruit speakers and organize college/trades school visits.
    • With the program staff, maintain an up-to-date database and files on all students.
    • Consult and collaborate with parents/guardians, teachers and staff about understanding and meeting the special needs of students.
    • Communicates the goals of the comprehensive Destinations Program to members, parents, and school officials.
    • Assist students in selecting a program of study to enhance career planning.
    • Assist all members, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career and personal/social skills, goals and plans. Accurately and appropriately interprets and utilizes student data.
    • Implement programs for career awareness and comprehensive educational/career plans which target high school completion, post-secondary opportunities, scholarships and financial aid information.
    • Coordinate ACT/SAT Prep tutors and training.
    • Understand the process for applying for FAFSA and the College application deadlines and application process.
    • Develop, implement and oversee a Mentorship Program for the teens.
    • Coordinate and implement BGCA specific programs, including Youth of the Year programs, quarterly programs, and nation-wide campaigns.
    • Develop quarterly, weekly, and monthly calendars in collaboration with Club and Program Directors at each club.

    Partnerships

    • Develop and maintains successful relationships with local high schools, colleges, Community Partners, and Businesses.
    • Hold office hours in local area high schools, meeting with teens and guidance counselors as appropriate.
    • Maintain summer internship program.

    Supervision

    • Ensure that goals and objectives of the program are monitored and executed by staff.
    • Provide guidance and feedback to staff.
    • Provide a safe environment for members at all times.
    • Ensure the emotional and physical safety of members.
    • Provide safe passage to and from off-site trips and special events.

    Additional Responsibilities

    • Maintain BGCIRC teen Instagram and social media accounts.
    • Assist in the recruitment and retention of teens, helping to achieve ADA goals of the teen center.
    • Assist with overall club programs or special events when needed.
    • Contribute to ensuring that facility, equipment, and supplies are maintained at the teen centers.
    • Participate in weekly staff meetings.
    • Contribute to creating a Club environment that facilitates the achievement of Youth Development Outcomes.
    • Contribute to programs, activities, and services that prepare youth for success.
    • Other job-related duties as assigned.

    SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

    • Four-year degree in related field from an accredited college or university (required) such as Human Growth Development, Social Work, Guidance Counseling and Child Development.
    • A minimum of two year’s work experience with adolescents, planning and supervising activities based on the developmental needs of young people.
    • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
    • Ability to motivate teens and manage behavioral problems.
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and be self-motivated
    • Group leadership skills, including an understanding of group dynamics.
    • Demonstrated organizational, staff and project management abilities.
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks and to develop solutions to problems with limited supervision.
    • Familiarity with proven and effective preparation and skill development for college and career readiness.
    • Satisfactory criminal background check.
    • Mandatory CPR and First Aid Certifications (training will be provided if not current)
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products - Excel, Word, Publisher.
    • And above all, good common sense.

    The mental demands include problem-solving, stress management, on-going educational training, oral and written communication, customer contact, and multiple concurrent tasking.

    Internal: Maintain close, daily contact with Teen staff, members, and management.

    External: Maintain contact as needed with external community groups, schools, members’ parents, and others to assist in resolving problems.
