    Opened to the public in 1935, The Frick Collection is a world-renowned art museum consisting of more than 1,800 works of art from the thirteenth to the nineteenth centuries displayed in the intimate surroundings of the former home of Pittsburgh industrialist Henry Clay Frick. It is considered one of the world's most perfect museums, and the residence is one of New York City's few remaining Gilded Age mansions. The Frick welcomes nearly 200,000 visitors a year to its tranquil mansion on the Upper East Side, encouraging visitors to closely observe, reflect, and engage with its esteemed collection.

    The Frick Art Reference Library, founded by Mr. Frick's daughter, Helen Clay Frick, in 1920, is an internationally recognized research library that serves as one of the world's most complete resources for the study of Western art.

    Our entire staff ensures that the resources of The Frick Collection are made accessible and inviting to all persons whomsoever, in accordance with the wishes of the museum's founder.

    Since summer 2020, The Frick has been in a temporary home—Frick Madison—at 75th Street and Madison Avenue (the former Whitney Museum of American Art), while renovations are underway at the mansion on 70th Street. Construction has progressed rapidly and, in addition to special exhibition galleries, education spaces we have added enhanced visitor amenities and accessible spaces. We are planning for our move back to 1 East 70th Street later in 2024.

    Position Summary

    The Custodial Manager, under the direction of the Manager of Engineering & Facilities, will be responsible for overseeing the activities of The Frick Collection's custodial team. The primary responsibility is to ensure that all daily and periodic work assignments are completed to the highest standards and according to schedule. Additionally, this position will also ensure that work requests are promptly addressed in order to achieve the highest level of customer satisfaction and in accordance the required standards.

    The Custodial Department at The Frick Collection is responsible for cleaning all offices, restrooms, public areas, galleries, as well as employee breakrooms and dining spaces. The Department assists with set-up/tear down for special events of all kinds: staff events, small luncheons, private corporate events, and fundraising events. Department staff are also responsible for maintaining the property surrounding the building by cleaning sidewalks, including gum and snow removal. Custodial staff also work to ready and maintain museum galleries for installation of artwork and for the visiting public. As such, duties include: careful dusting and cleaning of historic surfaces and finishes, including, but not limited to marble, limestone, carved wood, decorative painted walls, ornate ironwork, display cases. Cleaning of interior and exterior windows, requiring opening of windows with 100 -year-old hardware and cleaning walls and ceilings.

    Experience And Qualifications

    • High School diploma or GED.
    • Museum, institutional, or luxury hotel experience is preferred: 3-5 years of prior supervisory experience in cleaning, maintenance or similar industries.
    • Must be well versed in use of all industrial cleaning equipment and machines
    • Sensitivity to working near/around sensitive materials including gilded elements, fabric-covered walls, ornate draperies, and, most importantly, invaluable works of art.
    • Experience in a fast-paced environment in which they have shown they can conduct multiple tasks and meet deadlines
    • Must be confident, flexible, detail oriented, Self-starter, adapt to change easily, Team player willing to do whatever it takes to meet goals and objectives, Strive for continuous improvement
    • Must have exceptional interpersonal, clear verbal, and written communication skills.
    • Experience handling customer service issues, a team player, who can interact successfully with colleagues at all levels.
    • Bi-lingual English/Spanish
    • Read and interpret documents in English such as periodicals, journals, and manuals
    • Ability to write for various channels, routine reports, correspondence, business letters, and summaries using prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style.
    • Strong relationship building skills, specifically able to build effective relationships with management, other facility teams, and your own team.
    • Must have sufficient computer skills that allows the individual to be able to use, in a proficient manner, all issued software programs including but not limited to: Excel, Nexonia or similar invoicing program, FMX/ Prism or similar work-order program, SharePoint and Microsoft Office.

    Work Hours And Compensation

    The Frick's regular workweek for Custodial staff is Mondays-Sundays.

    These staff members are generally scheduled to work 40 hours per week; shifts vary but are expected to be 8 hours/day 5 days/week.

    The base annual salary range for this position is $69,000 - $72,000; the range for the hourly rate is $33.17 – $34.62; a 10% differential is applied to the hourly rate for hours worked on evening and overnight shifts. Hours worked in excess of 40 per workweek are paid at time-and-one-half for nonexempt Custodial positions.

    Since the Custodial Manager, and others in the department, are relied upon to support readying the galleries for art installation, opening for the public, and special events, work shifts may be scheduled outside of normal business hours and on weekends.
