The Collection Specialist
Summary - This is a multi-faceted position with primary responsibilities in the Collections area. A collection specialist is responsible for collecting negative shares, credit cards, and delinquent loans. The collection specialist will assist members by offering solutions on how to preserve the loan and assist members in developing plans to bring accounts to current status .
The individual utilizes various collection tools to minimize delinquency and obtain payment commitment by enlisting the cooperation of the member. They will also make outbound collection calls on past due accounts. The collection specialist must maintain a detailed written record of all communications made regarding the delinquency.
They will perform skiptracing on delinquent accounts in a timely manner and in accordance to department procedures. Make determinations on when loan collateral should be repossessed or foreclosed, and serve as a liaison with attorneys, real estate agents and agencies in handling the repossession of collateral.
The collection specialist will file claims with insurance companies and/or collateral protection companies as is warranted by damage to repossessed collateral. They will assist in the sales of repossessed/foreclosed collateral as needed as well as research and recommend charge off’s to supervisor.
Education and experience required:
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Minimum 1-3 years of bank or credit union experience, experience performing collection duties, specifically in the area of indirect loan collections, repossessions and foreclosures.
In depth knowledge of federal bankruptcy and Iowa collection laws is required.
Strong analytical and communication (verbal and written) skills are required as well as proven negotiation skills.
Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) is preferred
Patience, tact and a strong service orientation are essential.
Bilingual/Spanish a plus.
