    The Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Success is the chief academic officer and chief student affairs officer of the college, reporting to the President. The following report directly to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Success:

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    Advises the President on policies and decisions affecting academic and student affairs issues.

    Provides overall leadership for the College’s learning environment, working with faculty, the division deans, and discipline directors/coordinators to improve instruction and promote the concept of evidence-based teaching practices in education with faculty.

    Sets goals and objectives to support the Tennessee Board of Regents and DSCC goals, documents baseline data, sets targets for each year and develops improvement strategies to meet those targets, and documents outcomes. Uses outcomes to set subsequent targets and strategies. Reiterates the process each year.

    Provides leadership for ongoing assessment and evaluation of existing programs and curricula and the use of results to improve learning.

    Plans, develops, and assesses new programs that meet emerging needs.

    Works with division deans to secure and retain an outstanding and diverse faculty and staff.

    Provides assistance to the division deans in the overall supervision of faculty members, including promotion and tenure decisions.

    Provides leadership in promoting resourcefulness by working with faculty and staff to prepare grant proposals to attract external funding for new and existing programs.

    Works with the Dean of Student Services, Director of Enrollment Services, Director of Records, Division Deans and faculty to develop integrated plans for the growth and development in all academic and student areas with special focus on the College’s Strategic Enrollment management plan.

    Works with the Dean of Student Services and Director of Student Life to promote activities related to student life and student government on campus, at off-campus centers, and for students in online classes.

    Works with the Dean of the Learning Resource Center to improve informational services to students, faculty, and staff, and to promote information literacy among students, faculty and staff at all three locations and online.

    Represents DSCC as coordinator of TBR academic initiatives such as offering Co-Requisites, making coursework accessible and implementing High Impact Practices.

    Interacts with chief academic officers and student affairs officers in the Tennessee Board of Regents to address academic issues and share best practices.

    Advocates for College faculty, staff, and programs to promote enrollment, quality, quality, and growth.

    Provides leadership for accreditation for the College and its programs, including the preparation of TBR and accreditation reports.

    Provides support and guidance to Division Deans and Program Directors for Academic Audit and Program Reviews for improvement and performance funding efforts of the academic divisions.

    Oversees student appeals and other discipline issues and make recommendations according to policy in consultation with the Dean of Student Services.

    Recommends annual budgets in consultation with deans and program directors and oversees expenditures.

    Represents the College in the community, works with chamber, businesses, and industry regarding programs.

    Represents DSCC at assigned TBR meetings.

    Works with the Deans, Program Directors, and the Director of Enrollment Services and Director of Records to maintain articulation agreements with area high schools, Tennessee Colleges of Applies Technology, colleges, and universities.

    Provides leadership in the recruitment of traditional, non-traditional, and dual enrollment students.

    Works with faculty and staff to derive optimal benefit from advisory committees.

    Ensures college meets performance funding metrics for outcome-based and Quality Assurance funding.

    Other duties as assigned by the President.

    Working Conditions:

    Sedentary: Deskwork; travel is required for college and program activities. Minimal Hazard/Exposure: Standard office settings. At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort.

    Required Qualifications:

    Successful leadership experience in a learner-centered setting focused on student success.

    Successful leadership in applying instructional technology to improve student learning.

    Understanding and knowledge of online instruction and the accessibility requirements.

    Experience in developing and managing budgets and personnel.

    Dedication to the mission of a comprehensive community college.

    Commitment to the principles of academic freedom, shared governance, and tenure

    Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.

    Minimum Requirements of Education and Experience:

    Doctorate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education earned/conferred prior to start of position, anticipated start of August 1, 2023

    At least three (3) years of experience in college leadership as a chair, director, or dean or similar position in an area that reports to the Vice President.

    At least three (3) years of community college teaching experience in a full-time position.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    At least five (5) years of community college teaching experience in a full-time position.

    Successful leadership experience in developing co-curricular activities to enhance the learning environment.

    Experience implementing, administering, and/or evaluating high impact practices.

    Proficiency with dual enrollment programming and assessment.

    Experience with strategic planning, institutional effectiveness, and institutional accreditation.

    Familiarity with outcomes-based funding.

    An appreciation for the work of Achieving the Dream and data disaggregation.

    Experience with grant funding.


    Minimum starting pay is $115,800 annually. With additional experience pay increases to a maximum pay of $144,800.
