Title IX/Compliance Investigator

  • Stanford University, recognized as one of the most prestigious and innovative academic and research institutions in the world, has an opening for a full-time Title IX/Compliance Investigator (hereinafter, “Investigator”). Title IX prohibited conduct includes discrimination on the basis of gender (sex), sexual harassment, sexual assault, sexual misconduct, relationship (dating) violence and stalking. The Investigator will be part of Stanford’s Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Education (SHARE) Title IX Office.

    Job Purpose
    The Investigator will report to the University’s Title IX Coordinator and Director of SHARE-Response Team (hereinafter, “Coordinator”). Under the direction of the Coordinator, the Investigator will perform investigations in support of compliance/privacy activities and address the adequacy and effectiveness of related policies, systems, processes, and controls across Stanford University. Compliance areas include sexual harassment, Title IX, ADA, EEO/Affirmative Action and institutional compliance. The Investigator will also be expected to perform case management and intake interviews. The Investigator is a core member of the team who, with the Coordinator and Director, will be called upon to manage cases, resolve cases, and prepare cases for hearing. The Investigator will coordinate with campus offices and partners in the SHARE-Education Team, the Office of Community Standards (OCS), Residential Education, the Graduate Life Office, etc.
    Responsibilities
    • Collaborate and consult with the Coordinator regularly to monitor and manage Title IX incidents to ensure an efficient and effective response to reports and complaints.
    • Serve as the investigator for cases alleging sexual harassment, including sexual assault, sexual misconduct, relationship (dating) violence, stalking, and retaliation.
    • Interview the impacted party, respondent, and relevant witnesses. Gather relevant evidence. Act as a neutral party through all aspects of investigation and ensure a prompt, fair, and neutral process for all parties. Advise impacted parties and respondents of their rights. Maintain a high level of confidentiality during all proceedings.
    • Ensure a well-documented Title IX or other compliance investigative process. Maintain accurate and thorough records and notes of investigatory process. Create comprehensive written investigative reports for the Coordinator that clearly identify the issues investigated, summarize the evidence, make findings under University policy, and recommend appropriate remedial steps.
    • Provide periodic, timely updates regarding the status of complaints received and investigations in progress to the Coordinator.
    • Collaborate with the Coordinator to identify and address any systemic problems that impact Title IX and Clery compliance. Work with other university stakeholders to ensure Title IX policies are communicated to all constituencies.
    • Assist Coordinator with the development and implementation of a comprehensive university Title IX training program for students, faculty, and staff.
    • Assist Coordinator with the development, implementation and maintenance of a case management database to organize, manage, and track all Title IX incidents.
    • Identify and integrate promising practices in the Title IX investigation arena into knowledge base and practice. Stay abreast of regulations and statutes relating to gender-based violence, including but not limited to Title IX, Clery, and VAWA.
    • Create and facilitate the delivery of training/presentations to the campus community regarding the university’s nondiscrimination policies and identifying and integrating best practices into the complaint resolution process.
    • Utilize electronic record keeping systems and produce reports using those systems.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested. The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

    Minimum Requirements

    Education and Experience:
    • Bachelor’s degree required and 4 years of relevant experience. Law or other graduate degree and a minimum of 5-8 years relevant experience such as a law enforcement investigator or other related field strongly preferred.
    • Experience working in higher education strongly preferred.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Significant experience conducting trauma-informed, fair investigations alleging discrimination based on sex, including sexual harassment, sexual assault, relationship violence and stalking, is required.
    • Knowledge, experience, and training in handling issues related to gender-based violence.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of Title IX and VAWA and other applicable laws and regulations is required;
    • Knowledge of best practices as they relate to institutions of higher education compliance with Title IX and VAWA;
    • Ability to manage multiple, on-going and complex caseload of Title IX-related incidents and complaints;
    • Effective project management, organization and analytical skills;
    • Strong presentation and facilitation skills with an emphasis on education and training for a variety of constituencies;
    • Strong written analytical and communication skills;
    • Ability to guide, advise and support the training and learning process with respect to Title IX and VAWA compliance;
    • Excellent attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, the ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information;
    • Ability to build relationships and establish collaborative partnerships across the institution;
    • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusivity, as well as the ability to work with a wide range of constituencies (staff, students, faculty, parents, administrators) with diplomacy and tact;
    • Maintenance of professional qualifications through on-going training and professional development;
    • Ability to act independently, take initiative and exercise sound judgment; and
    • Experience with and use of Restorative Justice Practices in resolution of disputes.

    Working Conditions:
    • Although generally this position is active during regular business hours with minimal travel expectations, occasional evenings are required, and the position requires being willing to check email and respond to urgent questions in evenings and on weekends.

    The expected pay range for this position is $107,000 to $115,000 per annum.
