    Responsibilities
    This position will play a key role in overseeing the full scope of research activities in the Department of Surgery and in enhancing the department’s participation in major research initiatives. This position will help to design, lead, and expand the Department of Surgery research portfolio. This position serves in a managerial capacity in order to oversee the research grant enterprise for the Department of Surgery. Will provide structure and oversight in the preparation of major grant proposals, cross disciplinary projects, research infrastructure, core research equipment, post award management, progress reports, and grant closeout. The incumbent will consult with faculty and Principal Investigators (PIs) to conceptualize and develop new research ideas in basic, translational, and clinical research.

    The Research Finance Director reports directly to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO). Budgetary suggestions and concerns will be discussed with the Chair, CAO, and Finance Manager. The incumbent will identify and disseminate sources of research opportunities to the Department Chair and members of the department; develop and assist in writing grant and contract proposals, prepare reports on research productivity, and make recommendations for improving research portfolios.
    Required Qualifications
    • Experience performing high-level analytical work, analyzing complex information, performing independent research, presenting complex data in a way that facilitates decision-making and making strategic recommendations.
    • Experience with NIH and DOD funding.
    • Clinical Trials, regulatory and compliance experience.
    • Experience preparing financial reports, developing financial projections (long and short term), performing budgetary planning and developing and monitoring budgetary processes.
    • Demonstrated experience in fiscal management and analysis including fiscal planning for a multi-million-dollar budget incorporating campus-wide funding sources. Working knowledge of the University’s planning and budget functions.
    • Experience and knowledge in budget preparation, analysis and forecasting with ability to control complex budgets and recognize potential problems.
    • Demonstrated experience in preparing effective grant-applications—preferably large-scale, multi-investigator projects that involve basic and translational research, research infrastructure, and research training.
    • Supervisory experience and leadership skills to effectively delegate tasks, set performance standards, evaluate performance, train, and motivate staff.
    • Demonstrated experience and working knowledge of financial, budget and payroll systems, or similarly complex administrative systems.
    • Demonstrated financial analysis skills and ability to conduct complex financial and budgetary analyses. Thorough working knowledge of general and University accounting practices and principles including fund accounting, and contract and grant accounting.
    • Skill in formulating and implementing financial policies, standards and systems to maximize accuracy and resources and to ensure University Policies and Procedures are upheld.
    • Working knowledge and understanding of the various University and System wide funding sources, contracts and grants, gifts and self-supporting activities and the ability to gather, organize and interpret data from diverse financial and budgetary sources.
    • Strong, advanced technical skills in the use of Excel and Access to develop and maintain financial models and automated financial reports. Thorough working knowledge of the University’s financial and personnel computer systems to download information into spreadsheets, graphs and statistical reports.
    • Demonstrated abilities in the conceptualization, organization, and development of complex scientific projects in a collaborative team setting.
    • Detailed knowledge of the NIH grant-application procedures, formats, guidelines and requirements.
    • Demonstrated ability to analyze large-scale academic efforts by identifying appropriate information strategies, gathering pertinent information and analyzing data.
    • Knowledge of federal and/or private grant budgeting, financial reporting and policies regarding use of grant funds.
    • Advanced spreadsheet, word-processing, database, presentation, and e-mail software skills (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint), and ability to design user friendly accounting reports.
    • Strong organizational and time management skills to establish goals, prioritize and coordinate multiple work assignments and deadlines.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to present and communicate technical and non-technical information clearly, concisely, and effectively to a variety of individuals.
    • Demonstrated experience at exercising administrative judgment and assuming responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service within functional area
    • Knowledge and experience in directing standardized operating procedures consistent with applicable policies, rules, and regulations.
    • Knowledge and experience to manage and make decisions on the most difficult financial issues.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Master’s degree.
    • Minimum of five years of grant writing and grant management experience.
    • Experience using financial information systems such as Kuali, OPTRS, etc.
    • Experience in health services research budget development for research proposals, contract/grant development, implementation, and administration.
    • Knowledge of University budget, financial, intramural and extramural fund sources, business practices, policies and procedures.
    • Knowledge of basic, translational, and clinical research methodologies, tools, requirements, and general aims. Knowledge of quantitative methodologies used in used in scientific and biological disciplines. Knowledge of statistics is a strong plus.
    • Ability to integrate the understanding of the UCDH goals and objectives, commitments and projections within a service-oriented healthcare environment.
    • Graduate level knowledge and abilities in research methodology.
    • Strong coaching and interpersonal skills to deliver effective team, classroom and one-on-one training sessions. Demonstrated ability to make effective presentations and demonstrations.
    • Ability to effectively communicate with investigators on the development of new projects and corresponding grant proposals. Ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of professional research from various disciplines, organizations, and staff.
    Special Requirements
    • This position will require an extended number of hours on the computer.
    • Must be able to work a flexible schedule.
    • Required travel for training and conferences.
