Court Clerk supports paralegals with various tasks required in the preparation of materials for court cases. Inputs and maintains tracking data for all case materials. Being a Court Clerk obtains requested files and assembles required materials for court proceedings. Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. Additionally, Court Clerk typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Court Clerk possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job. SUMMARY This position is responsible for all judicial functions associated with the overall supervision and operation of the Chitimacha Tribal Trial Court, Juvenile Court, and Peacemaker Court. The Chief Judge handles all phases of civil (e.g., domestic relations, probate, personal injury, worker’s compensation, civil complaints, and any other civil matters), traffic, juvenile, child welfare matters, and criminal litigation.
EDUCATION Must have a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and must be a member in good standing of a state bar and knowledge of all relevant aspects of tribal law, federal law, and capable of researching and applying any state law relevant to Tribal Court proceedings.
EXPERIENCE: At least (10) years of experience as a licensed attorney and a minimum of 5 years’ experience as a judge, preferably a tribal court judge, is required. Trial experience as either a trial judge or a criminal or civil attorney-litigator for at least (5) years is highly preferred. Judicial administrative experience of at least (5) years is also preferred. The trial or administrative experience factors may be within the required minimum years of judicial experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Due to the sensitivity of this position, candidates must have neither prior criminal arrests nor convictions This position will be subject to a professional services contract that will contain, among other provisions, requirements for submission to a thorough background check, and verifiable evidence of the maintenance of good character. Candidates will be evaluated with an emphasis on their demonstration of certain ABA selection criteria, including, but not limited to the following: (1) Experience, (2) Integrity, (3) Professional Competence, (4) Judicial Temperament, (5) History of Service to the Law and Contributions to the Effective Administration of Justice.
POSITION STATUS: Independent Contract for Professional Services Court is held bi-weekly and as needed. Other than Court appearances, the services expected are typically less than full-time, but candidates should acknowledge availability at diverse hours. The contract will confirm the appropriate expectations.
