Data Scientist identifies trends, patterns, and anomalies found in big data sets by performing extensive data analysis to develop insights. Performs data mining, cleaning, and aggregation processes to prepare data, implement data models, conduct analysis, and develop databases. Being a Data Scientist interprets results from multiple structured and unstructured data sources using programming, statistical, and analytical techniques and tools. Collaborates with teams to understand each data analysis projects' underlying purpose, focus, and objectives. Additionally, Data Scientist designs, develops, and implements the most valuable data-driven solutions for the organization. May require a master's degree in computer science, mathematics, engineering or equivalent. Typically reports to a manager. The Data Scientist work is closely managed.     What our team does:

    Coastal's Analytics and Insights Team delivers excellence at the intersection of data science, research, and financial industry expertise. We identify the questions and find the answers that solve the most pressing issues at the credit union. Our work uses outcomes from data science to synthesize, contextualize, and present insights and recommendations actionable for leaders across the organization. These data products include member insights, market insights, and product insights.


    Your opportunities and contributions:

    As a member of the Analytics and Insights Team, you will help to develop and implement data products that will drive business decisions.

    Your responsibilities will be to:

    • Collaborate with business units to gather requirements on data products to create
    • Preprocess data through standardization, normalization, cleaning, and formatting
    • Develop analyses and models with the right level of complexity to solve the business problem at hand
    • Identify patterns, trends, and insights in the data using appropriate statistical methods and techniques
    • Produce clear, concise, documented, and production-ready code
    • Create visualizations and reports to communicate findings to stakeholders

    You will have the opportunity to learn from and be supported by a collaborative Analytics and Insights Team. These full-time positions are located in Raleigh, NC, but are fully in line with Coastal's support of a hybrid work environment.

    • Proficiency in SQL
    • Proficiency in Python and its associated data analysis libraries like Pandas, NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib, ...
    • Proficiency with Power BI
    • Excellence in data visualization and data storytelling
    • Prior work experience performing exploratory data analysis on real-world datasets
    • Knowledge of statistical modeling, machine learning, mathematical optimization, and/or data mining
    • Experience using and evaluating machine learning models
    • Understanding of the data science lifecycle
    • Intellectual curiosity and the ability to conduct independent research on new topics
    • Excellent verbal and communication skills to both technical and nontechnical audiences
    • Experience at a financial institution is a big plus

    • Degree in a data science related field (Computer Science, Mathematics, Operations Research, Statistics, Data Science, Economics, or related field.) or equivalent work experience.
