    Job Summary:

    Chicago Public Schools is seeking a skilled and dedicated Data Security Specialist to join the department of Information and Technology Services. As a vital member of our cybersecurity department, this role will play a critical role in preventing data breaches, protecting our confidential information, and ensuring compliance with

    data protection regulations. CPS is looking for an individual who is passionate about data protection, incident response, analysis and safeguarding the interests of the organization as a means to provide safe and equitable education to all Chicago students.

    The Data Security Specialist position will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:

    • DLP Strategy: Develop and implement an organizational DLP strategy, with policies and procedures to proactively identify, monitor, and prevent data loss and data exfiltration. Apply encryption methods where applicable to ensure data security.
    • DLP Tool Management: Administer, configure, and maintain DLP tools including but not limited to CPS’ Secure Email Gateway (SEG), Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB), Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) providing SASE solutions to our customers and technologies, ensuring they are up-to-date and effectively operational.
    • Policy Development: Create and enforce DLP policies and rules that align with the organization's security, compliance objectives and industry best standards.
    • Data Classification: Collaborate with stakeholders to classify data, identifying sensitive and critical information that requires protection and create solutions for Data Classification where appropriate.
    • Data Categorization: Develop, maintain and socialize a data categorization framework to provide detailed information surrounding the data population CPS shares within and outside of the organization
    • Incident Detection and Response: Monitor DLP alerts and incidents, investigate potential data breaches, and respond to security incidents in a timely and effective manner.
    • Security Awareness: Partner with training to educate and raise awareness among employees about DLP policies, best practices, and the importance of data protection.
    • Compliance: Ensure that DLP measures adhere to relevant regulatory requirements and industry standards, and assist in audit and compliance reporting.
    • Risk Assessment: Conduct and review risk assessments to identify vulnerabilities, threats, and potential data leakage risks. Develop strategies to mitigate these risks.
    • Reporting: Prepare regular reports on DLP activities, incident trends, and risk assessments for management, and make recommendations for improvements. Identify, create and socialize pertinent KPIs and SLAs associated with DLP and data categorization.
    • Technology Evaluation: Stay informed about emerging DLP technologies, evaluate their suitability for the organization's evolving needs and act as a meaningful contributor towards a Zero Trust Architecture

    In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the Data Security Specialist must possess the following qualifications:

    Education Required:

    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or a related field is preferred.
    • Relevant certifications (e.g., Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) are a plus.

    Experience Required:

    ● Minimum of 4 years of experience in data loss prevention, information security, or a related field.

    ● Proficiency in DLP tools, such as Symantec, Trellix, or Forcepoint.

    ● In-depth knowledge of data classification, data protection, data categorization and encryption technologies.

    ● Strong understanding of relevant data protection regulations, such as GDPR, HIPAA, or CCPA.

    • Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy and information socialization.
    • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team.

    Conditions of Employment

    As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to:

    ● Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency - Employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district. The Chicago residency requirement does not apply to temporary/part-time positions; however, all CPS employees must be residents of Illinois.

    ● Be Fully Vaccinated Against COVID-19 - Unless approved for a medical or religious exemption, all employees are required to be up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccinations, including boosters, and to submit proof of vaccination to the district within 30 days of hire. “Up-to-date” on vaccination is defined as being

    at least two weeks past all primary vaccine doses and any applicable boosters.

    Residency Requirement:

    As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and must maintain residency throughout their employment with the district.
