  • The Director of Civil Engineering is responsible and accountable for the leadership and overall coordination at all levels during planning, design and implementation of engineering projects to ensure project completion in an efficient manner. This position plans an integral role in the overall success of engineering projects and ensures a positive relationship with clients and team members in a growing company environment.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Supervisory Responsibilities:
    ❖ Support the VP of Civil Engineering in managing the Civil Engineering Department and provide regular updates on the status of the Department;
    ❖ Perform quality review of contract documents including but not limited to plans, specifications, and estimates;
    ❖ Manage projects, clients and staff within the Civil Engineering Department;
    ❖ Monitor schedule of all projects within the Civil Engineering Department;
    ❖ Work in collaboration with VP/Accounting to prepare invoices for Civil Design projects as required;
    ❖ Manage financial performance of the Design projects;
    ❖ Direct, mentor and support direct reports through training and feedback to achieve excellence;
    ❖ Review employee progress with VP by setting goals and correcting any disciplinary actions;
    ❖ In coordination with the VP, ensure company policies and procedures are enforced and document any performance related activities such as outstanding achievements or disciplinary actions.
    ❖ Monitor employee's workload and make recommendations to VP for position additions or replacements;
    ❖ Ensure projects stay within scope and budget guidelines.

    Position Responsibilities:
    ❖ Direct engineering personnel in formulating plans, designs, cost estimates, and specifications for civil, as well as traffic and bridge projects from concept to bid documents to deliver high-quality designs.
    ❖ Develop engineering teams to satisfy the scope of the project and monitor the progress of the team.
    ❖ Determine the goals and devise plans for each phase of the project to improve sustainability and/or reduce environmental impacts of operations.
    ❖ Hands-on design assisting in the preparation of design plans using Civil3D.
    ❖ Calculations and report preparation for storm drainage and stormwater management and water quality treatment systems.
    ❖ Review and approve engineering designs for accuracy.
    ❖ Periodically visit project sites to ensure design specifications and standards are met and handle any concerns.
    ❖ Direct engineering activities to ensure compliance with environmental, safety, or other government regulations.
    ❖ Provide technical expertise to direct and indirect personnel regarding design work.
    ❖ In the absence of the VP of Civil Engineering, partner with CEO & Marketing Director to prepare items such as proposals, staff resume, and project qualifications.
    ❖ Participate in client meetings such as proposal, progress and completion meetings when necessary.
    ❖ Prepare status/progress reports and meeting minutes as required.
    ❖ All other duties as assigned with ability to demonstrate flexibility to a variety of schedules and hours to meet business needs.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    ❖ Experience in civil engineering design.
    ❖ Experience in managing clients, projects, and engineers/CAD operators with professional demeanor.
    ❖ Has the ability to create and finalize construction drawings.
    ❖ Attention to detail.
    ❖ Excellent writing and communication skills.
    ❖ Strong experience with management software including Microsoft Project or Primavera.
    ❖ Progressive leadership roles in managing multiple projects.
    ❖ Thorough understanding of civil and traffic engineering with significant experience in roadway engineering including vertical and horizontal alignments, storm drainage and analysis, utility design, MPT/WZTC and respective federal and state design guidelines such as AASHTO.
    ❖ Experience with New York (city and state) agencies and their respective design criteria/guidelines.
    ❖ Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership techniques and the coordination of people and resources.
    ❖ Expertise of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints and drawings.
    ❖ Strong understanding of government regulations, OSHA regulations and safety procedures.
    ❖ Proficiency with AutoCAD with Civil 3D, MicroStation, Inroads, Bluebeam, and Adobe.
    ❖ Extremely organized and detailed oriented, with the ability to maintain accuracy while handling multiple requests in a growing company environment.
    ❖ Highly analytical with the ability to calculate complex mathematical equations.
    ❖ Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams and other virtual meeting platforms as required.



    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
    Bachelor's degree (B. S., or B.A.) in Civil Engineering and a minimum of twelve (12) years related experience in A/E/C industry. Knowledge of project management principles and practices.
