Community Educator

Job type: Part-time (average of 29 hours per week)
Position Summary:
· Assist the Director of Education in serving the community by developing and presenting programs and science demonstrations at both onsite and offsite.
· Summer availability with some overtime required, as the majority of outreach is done during May-August.
° Leading school/youth/adult tours, Museum School, planetarium shows, and other programs
° The Community Educator is highly visible in the community, pays attention to details and deadlines, is punctual and works well in a team or alone.
° Will work with the general public, including families and children.
° Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking required.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
· Assist the Director of Education in providing outreach to libraries, festivals, daycares, schools, and communities in Iowa.
· Work occasional Saturday Science Demonstrations at the Bluedorn Science Imaginarium.
· Assist and maintain demonstrations and STEM programming.
· Collaborate with the Director of Education to complete writeups and progress reports of outreach programming.
· Provide program attendance and maintain documentation.
· Assist with programs within the education department as necessary.
· Performs other duties as directed by the Director of Education.
· Schedule, book, and take payments for Outreach programs.
· Relay program details and answer questions about Outreach programs with potential clients.
· Remain current with client communications and inquiries.
Secondary Duties:
· Work occasional nights and weekends.
· Cover Front Desk lunches at Imaginarium when scheduled for Saturday Science Demonstrations.
· Support Education Team in district wide programming.
· Learn tours, lessons, and planetarium shows related to Museum School
· Assists staff in other areas of the museum when needed.
Minimum requirements:
· The minimal formal education for the Community Educator is a high school diploma/ GED, with preference given to those working towards a BA/BS. Background in science and working with youth is preferred, but not required.
· Must have a valid state driver’s license.
· Must have reliable transportation.
· Must be creative and exhibit enthusiasm and flexibility.
· Must demonstrate comfort in a team environment, with strong collaboration skills.
· Must be able to lift to 50 lbs.
· Must be comfortable driving a cargo van and large S.U.V. for extended periods.
Work Environment:
· Must be available to work some nights and weekends.
· Must be available to work extended days, especially during the summer.
· Must be able to withstand summer temperatures as some events may be outdoors.
· Must be able to drive for extended periods over long distances.
