  • What You Will Be Doing
    Under general direction, the Area Fire Management Officer (FMO) manages the implementation of the Division of Forestry and Fire Protection wildland fire suppression program at the Tok Area office. 
     
    This position ensures safe, efficient, and effective fire prevention, fire preparedness, and fire suppression in accordance with Alaska statutes and the Alaska Interagency Wildland Fire Management Plan.

    The Division of Forestry & Fire Protection fosters a mission-driven culture and is responsible for protecting Alaska’s values, including life and property, from wildland fire. The Division works closely with federal, state, and local emergency response agencies and private industry vendors to provide wildland fire management and protection for the State of Alaska.

    The Working Environment You Can Expect
    • This position is being recruited for the Tok location: Mile Post 123.9 Tok Cut Off. 
    • Must be able to command, think clearly, and act decisively during prolonged and/or during multiple incidents under stressful conditions when life and property are threatened. 
    • The position requires a NIMMS ICS red card with an "arduous" physical fitness rating. 
    • Expected to work up to sixteen hours per day for extended periods of time throughout the fire season.
     
    The knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies needed to be successful in this position include:
    • Ability to regularly exercise discretionary authority and multi-task with numerous demands, issues, deadlines, and challenges in compressed timeframes during wildland fires.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills for reports, press releases, media interviews, fire information, fire and situational briefings, and interagency information exchange.
    • Experience in leading, training, and developing staff from diverse backgrounds.
    • Possess a working knowledge of computers, software applications, databases, and automated systems.
    • Technical knowledge of fire management practices and procedures.

    Either an associate's degree; 24 semester hours or 36 quarter hours of post-secondary education; or certification from an accredited vocational technical school in: forestry, natural resources, emergency management, and/or a related field

    AND

    Two years journey level experience in the technical aspects of forest management and practices such as fire prevention, fire suppression, timber sales, reforestation, or inventory.

     

    Substitution:

    Certification within the preceding three (3) years by the candidate's employing agency as Qualified for Division/Group Supervisor (DIVS) or Incident Commander Type 3 (ICT3) in the National Incident Management System: Wildland Fire Qualification System Guide (see PMS 310-1 https://www.nwcg.gov/sites/default/files/publications/pms310-1.pdf) will substitute for the required education.

     

    Special Note:

    Related curricula includes fields such as: geosciences, geography, natural resources, environmental sciences, soils, hydrology, wildlife habitat management, forest engineering, remote sensing, vegetation classification, natural resource bio-metrics, emergency management, and wildland firefighting.


    One year of work experience equals 12 months of seasonal work.


    Positions may require travel both in and out-of-state for fire suppression assignments; may be on stand-by or recall status during the fire season; may be assigned work in and out of the area that requires the absence from the duty station for 14 to 21 days; may fly in small fixed wing aircraft or helicopters and handle hazardous materials.


    Positions require "Red Card" qualification under the Incident Command System.  The positions must qualify at and maintain Red Card qualification at the "Arduous" physical level of wildland firefighting duty using the work capacity test (aka "The Pack Test").
