  • Education: A bachelor’s or master’s degree in a behavioral health such as counseling or social work required. Licensure as an LISW, LPCC, LPC, LSW or related behavioral health field required. Education in assessment and treatment of mental/ emotional/ substance use disorders in adults.

    Experience: 2-3 years’ experience in the behavioral health field working with adults who have mental illness, substance use disorders, or dual diagnosis. Experience in crisis de-escalation, screening/assessment, counseling, case management and community re-entry planning preferred. Experience working with mental health/ substance use / forensic populations preferred.

    Qualifications: Shall demonstrate strong skills in crisis intervention, individual and group counseling, as well as assessment and treatment of adult clients with mental and emotional disorders. Experience in recovery services is beneficial. Must be able to develop appropriate treatment plans based upon needs presented by the client while in the jail as well as upon community re-entry. Must have the ability to manage and track many tasks simultaneously as well as demonstrate flexibility, adaptability, collaboration, mediation, patience, and organization. Shall be open to the individuality of others and able to establish professional rapport. Shall possess strong oral and writing skills. Understanding the criminal justice/ legal system is key to relating to the specific circumstances of the client as well as in relating to court personnel. Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Word and Excel) as well as electronic health record software.

    Position Summary: The Forensic Mental Health Clinician provides crisis intervention, screening/ assessment, counseling and community re-entry planning for clients who are at the Medina County Jail. One on one or group counseling is utilized in managing a wide range of psychiatric, behavioral, psychosocial and emotional concerns which may be impacting client functioning. The role involves crisis de-escalation, crisis management and safety planning for clients who may at times be experiencing a psychiatric emergency. Clients served are primarily at the county jail, but may also be in the community while on special dockets such as mental health court, recovery court and / or veteran’s court. The clinician is a member of a multidisciplinary team that develops appropriate care plans for clients. Prior to release, the clinician assesses the needs of clients to develop community re-entry plans and carry out linkages with needed resources to prevent relapse, decompensation, and recidivism.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    Clinical

    1. Perform diagnostic assessments and/ or screenings as clinically indicated with persons at the Medina County Jail.

    2. Engage with the clinical team in treatment planning based on client needs.

    3. Utilize resources such as jail programming, community treatment resources, and community support resources as appropriate.

    4. Provide individual/ group counseling.

    5. Provide crisis intervention/ de-escalation.

    6. Develop crisis management and safety plans.

    7. Provide mental health education to consumers, families or significant others as clinically appropriate.

    8. Monitor client compliance with jail mental health and recovery services.

    9. Provide linkage with resources needed to be successful in the community whether it is treatment, housing, social supports, vocational, education, etc. Clients may be those in the jail, leaving the jail, or placed on the mental health court docket.

    10. Assist consumers in developing skills to support their independence, healthy living, enhanced relations with others, and behaviors which prevent re-engagement in illegal activity.

    11. Consult as needed/ required with criminal justice professionals, i.e. judges, probation officers with regard to inmate participation and progress mental health treatment/ programs.

    12. Participate in clinical supervision.

    General

    1. Attend agency, department, staff and supervision meetings.

    2. Attend professional development in-services and continuing education as required by agency policy as well as professional licensure standards.

    3. Abide by agency policy and procedures as well as follow the minimum jail standards as required by the Medina County Jail.

    4. Complete appropriate documentation of mental health services provided to the clients.

    5. Maintain required data collection to provide monthly, quarterly and annual reports required by the agency, probation, and any funding resources.

    6. Work with Medina County Sheriff’s Department/ jail administration staff to address any administrative issues/ concerns that arise in providing mental health services within the jail setting.

    7. Provide training/ education to the jail staff / community on topics related to mental health, suicide prevention, risk assessment, treatment resources or other clinical topics as requested.

    8. Maintain a high level of professionalism and cooperative spirit in working with fellow staff, clients, and other professionals in the community. Provide services to consumers in an ethical and respectful manner while being mindful of client rights, confidentiality, individuality, and the values of a professional workplace.

    The above listed responsibilities are not intended to be all inclusive and do not exclude any other functions customarily performed by a Forensic Mental Health Clinician which may from time to time be requested by the immediate supervisor or the CEO. Work schedules may vary according to the need of the agency.
