Position Title: Internal Medicine Physician
Department: Colusa Indian Health Clinic
Reports to: Director of Clinic Operations
Classification: Exempt
Position Status: Regular, Full Time
The incumbent is expected to work in accordance with the mission, purpose, and values of the Colusa Indian Community Council.
The Internal Medicine Physician provides long-term, comprehensive care to our patients and manages both common and complex diseases. The Internal Medicine Physician will work with the Medical Director and Director of Clinic Operations, to help ensure the highest level of quality health services to patients, as well as promoting a healthy lifestyle within the Tribal Community
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

- Consults with patients to understand their symptoms and health concerns;
- Diagnoses and treats acute illnesses, such as chronic diseases and conditions;
- Prescribes and administers medication, therapy, and other specialized medical care to treat or prevent illness, disease, or injury;
- Explains procedures and discussing test results or prescribed treatments with patients;
- Monitors patients' conditions and progress, and re-evaluating treatments, as necessary;
- Provides health and wellness advice to patients, including diet, physical activity, hygiene, and disease prevention;
- Orders screening tests and other measures that aid in the diagnostic process, and review reports, labs, x-rays, EKGs and all other screening methods
- Immunizes patients against preventable diseases;
- Maintaining detailed notes of appointments with patients, including comments, tests, and/or treatments prescribed, and test results;
- Refers patients to other medical specialists, when necessary;
- Provides support and advice to patients receiving long-term care;
- Prepares official health documents or records, when necessary;
- Performs minor procedures, both surgical and non-surgical, as needed;
- Prescribes medication as part of a treatment plan in accordance to federal and state laws, and perform drug and disease utilization reviews on a regular basis to ensure quality treatment of patients and to avoid any drug and/or therapy conflicts;
- Attends regular meetings involving professionals who are a part of the health care team;
- Provides the highest level of quality preventative care services and manage chronic and complex conditions for all clinic patients;
- Coordinates care with other medical professionals using the Patient Centered Medical Home as a guideline for managing patient health;
- Strives to build long term relationships with patients, and provide information and techniques to help patients take control of their health;
- Provides appropriate diagnosis and documentation of patients using the ICD-9 and ICD-10 guidelines;
- Utilizes the clinic’s Electronic Health Record System and work towards meeting all required measures for meeting Meaningful Use;
- Works with the clinic nursing staff to promote Diabetes prevention and treatment of Tribal members as well as non-tribal patients;
- Participates in all clinical Quality Improvement programs;
- Assists with maintenance of electronic medical records according to policy/procedure and regulatory standards by ensuring the documentation of all applicable health data within the Electronic Health Record System;
- Assists in supervising all medical staff as requested by Director of Clinical Operations, to include Nursing staff, Medical Assistants, and Medical Receptionist in their job performance;
- Works with staff to develop and revise medical policies and procedures and quality assurance activities;
- Collaborates with all coworkers in performing duties required to provide patient-focused services that meet all regulatory and licensing standards; and
- May perform other duties commensurate with the functions and level of the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Graduation from an accredited medical school with a degree of Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy. Must be Board Eligible/Certified.
- Experience: Minimum of one year in an out-patient clinic setting preferred.
- Licensing and Other Qualifications: Currently licensed to practice medicine in the State of California;
- Doctoral degree with a specialty focus on internal medicine.
- Board Certification or Board Eligibility in Internal Medicine.
- Must possess current, valid unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of California.
- Must have current, valid unrestricted DEA registration.
- Must be CPR certified.
Supervisorial Duties: Advanced Practice Provider supervision required.
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Must be able to work effectively under multiple demands and adjust priorities as circumstances require meeting clinical/staffing needs of the patients.
- Work a flexible schedule and be willing to work additional hours if needed for the provision of quality patient care;
- Exceptional attention to detail; and
- Excellent communicator who can empathize with patients.
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee:
- Physically able to stand, stoop and lift up to twenty (20) pounds.
- Ability to assist patients weighing up to two-hundred and fifty (250) pounds with getting up and down from exam chairs.
- Able to walk and stand at least 50% of the shift.
- Good manual dexterity and visual and auditory acuity.

- Work is performed in an office setting which is well-lit, ventilated, and temperature controlled.
- The noise level is usually low to moderate.
- The incumbent routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, telephones, photocopiers, and fax machines.
