    Summary:

    The Investment Operations Analyst is a member of a team that invests and manages HHMI's $24 billion endowment fund. HHMI's endowment comprises a diverse portfolio, including investments in domestic and international hedge funds, private equity funds, venture capital funds, real assets, and direct co-investments, as well as publicly-traded domestic and foreign stocks, government securities and other strategies spanning multiple asset classes.

    The person in this role is responsible for functions within the area of fund operations primarily related to: (1) Investment Transaction Activity, including subscription and redemption processes; (2) Portfolio, Operational and Risk Reporting; (3) Compliance and Regulatory analysis, filings, and reporting; and (4) Operational policies, procedures, and documentation.

    What you'll do:

    Investment Transaction Activity

    • Work closely with the investment and operations teams to meet investment objectives, including collaborations to manage overall process for documentation of HHMI's investment activity (e.g., alternative asset subscriptions and redemptions).
    • Respond to external investment managers' requests for certifications, tax and other information.
    • Track approvals from Finance Committee and Chief Investment Officer to ensure compliance with internal requirements and maintain a corresponding electronic report.
    • Understand, document, and serve as a resource to team members regarding specified legal terms associated with investments, seeking advice of internal counsel as necessary.
    • Initiate new account opening process and completion of required data when necessary.

    Portfolio, Operational and Risk Reporting

    • Support the design, organization, visualization, and delivery of regular and ad hoc reports driven by the investment team's strategic and analytical objectives.
    • Partner with technology specialists to ensure the integrity of reporting and to facilitate the regular maintenance and upgrades of reporting systems.
    • Actively monitor external and internal investment guidelines.
    • Analyze, report and present metrics related to fund liquidity.
    • Assist in enhancing the format and timing in which analysis/reporting is provided.
    • Identify, communicate, and resolve errors, anomalies, and significant findings in a timely and accurate manner in the context of various reconciliation processes.
    • Support selected aspects of HHMI's annual audit with external audit firm, and risk or controls assessments conducted by external or internal auditors.

    Compliance and Regulatory

    • Maintain and update HHMI's anti-money laundering and know-your-customer information, and liaise with external managers, administrators, and counsel as necessary.
    • Ensure timely and accurate completion of HHMI's domestic and international regulatory filings and registrations (Forms 13F, N-PX, 13H, 13G/D, etc.).
    • Support active monitoring of international sanctions rules and regulations applicable to HHMI.
    • Collaborate on other reports and processes with other team members (e.g., restricted trading list, beneficial ownership reports, etc.).

    Operational Policies, Procedures and Documentation

    • Train and partner with colleagues across the Department in their orientation and implementation of internal policies, processes, investment transactions, etc.
    • Develop content and maintain/edit colleague-provided content for comprehensive operational "Desk Reference manual" as required by Trustee policies, setting out in extensive detail a series of processes and requirements applicable to all aspects of Department and fund operations.
    • Coordinate new hire and annual certifications from employees regarding departmental policies.
    • Act as approver for internal personal trading compliance program.

    Other

    • Collaborate with colleagues on special projects, including as part of quarterly Investment Advisory Committee and Trustee meetings.
    • Research topics of interest and undertake special projects driven by strategy and important developments in the global investment arena, contributing to a culture of intellectual curiosity, analytical rigor, and innovation.
    • Administer selected contracts related to responsibilities.
    • Instruct and coordinate with members of Office Services team in support of responsibilities.

    What you bring:

    • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Management, Economics, or relevant academic or professional knowledge.
    • At least three years of related experience working for an investment fund, institutional investor, asset manager or other financial institution.
    • Understanding of core asset classes, alternative investments (e.g., private equity and hedge funds) and asset management generally.
    • Direct or indirect experience with allocators such as endowment funds, funds of funds, outsourced chief investment offices (OCIO), family offices or other institutional investors.
    • Familiarity with all or some of the following: investment subscription and redemption documentation and other investment-related agreements, internal compliance procedures, governmental filings and registrations, portfolio reporting using advanced technology tools, legal terms and requirements, financial statement, and audit processes.
    • Familiarity with and willingness to master databases; CRM software (e.g., Dynamo, Backstop, Bipsync, Salesforce); portfolio analytics applications (e.g., Caissa, Solovis, Novus, Burgiss, MSCI); Bloomberg tools; accounting and custodial platforms (e.g., Eagle Investment Systems Star/Pace, BNY Mellon Nexen).
    • Investment transaction and/or project management experience.
    • Comfortable with learning new technologies, software applications and administrative procedures.
    • Proactive and innovative problem solver demonstrating a strong work ethic, organizational skills, and unwavering attention to detail.
    • Capability to display excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with the highest level of integrity, intellectual capability, honesty, and personal responsibility.
    • Ability to synthesize large amounts of data in a clear and concise manner.
    • Superior analytical skills and abilities in Microsoft Excel and other applications for data reconciliation, aggregation, and presentation.

    Physical Requirements:

    Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
