Director, Duggan Library

  • Hanover College seeks an innovative and experienced leader to serve as Director of the Agnes Brown Duggan Library. Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Director will lead an experienced staff in drawing upon a history of excellence to build a college library of the future based upon a recent comprehensive review process. The Director oversees all aspects of the library, supporting the vision of the College, upholding the mission of the library, and collaborating with faculty to sustain the curriculum and advance information literacy. This is an administrative staff appointment with faculty status. Desired start is August 2024.

    Duggan Library houses the College's collection of over half a million volumes (print and electronic) along with an extensive media collection and access to over 100 databases covering all academic subjects. The three-story, 50,000 square foot facility is a central campus feature and also houses the Gladish Learning Center, collaborative learning spaces, computer lab, and media tech room. A major component of the library is the Joseph Wood Evans Memorial Special Collections and Archives Center, housing over 150,000 items from 300 B.C.E. to the present day. The library serves approximately 1,000 residential undergraduate students and over 200 graduate students in our expanding hybrid programs in health sciences.

    Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • In collaboration with the Provost, establish and implement the strategic direction for library operations to align with the College's vision, mission, and core values and to proactively adapt to changing student and faculty needs.
    • Promote and facilitate innovation in technology, service models, and librarianship.
    • Lead professional library staff in strategic planning for the library in its central role of supporting teaching, learning, and scholarly research.
    • Lead the Duggan Library's efforts to be a hub for student services and resources through partnerships with academic departments, Gladish Learning Center, Information Technology, Levett Career Center, and other units.
    • Recruit, train, develop, and evaluate library personnel.
    • Champion and facilitate efforts to improve access, equity, diversity, and inclusion in all library services.
    • Organize and supervise services and staff as well as the overall development and administration of the collections.
    • Oversee assessment and improvement of library operations and services.
    • Develop and administer the annual library budget, including gift funds, and work with the Office of Advancement to promote effective donor relations and to secure external funding and gifts in support of library operations and services
    • Seek grant opportunities in support of the library.
    • Establish and maintain strong consortia relationships in support of library services.
    • Represent the College and library in local, regional and national networks, consortia, and professional organizations.
    • Participate in reference services, bibliographic instruction, and as liaison to academic departments.
    • Compile and submit required annual library data to national, regional, and professional reporting agencies and accrediting bodies.
    • Serve on College committees and task forces as appointed.

    Required Education and Experience

    • An MLS or MLIS from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution or an equivalent international program.
    • At least five years of increasingly responsible administrative experience in an academic library.

    While it is unlikely that a single candidate will have all the following qualifications and characteristics, the ideal candidate should possess many of the following:

    • Demonstrated ability to create a library environment that is welcoming to a diverse college population.
    • Expert knowledge of the challenges and trends impacting academic libraries and colleges with experience developing innovative and creative solutions to respond.
    • A clear vision for the academic library as a vibrant center of teaching, learning, civic engagement, and diversity and a demonstrated commitment to developing a dynamic and evolving student-centered library.
    • Demonstrated ability to support students' access to library and information resources.
    • Demonstrated effective problem-solving and strategic planning skills.
    • Ability to manage and maintain records and databases to track, compile, interpret, and present data.
    • Record of success in leading library staff effectively and fostering a positive team-based working environment.
    • Significant experience in financial planning and budget administration.
    • Experience seeking, writing, and administering grants.
    • Successful record as an administrative leader with experience in strategic planning; fiscal management; and personnel management including staff and students.
    • Evidence of developing effective collaborations and relationships across campus constituencies, as well as with community partners and key stakeholders that expand beyond the campus community.
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills and the ability to act as a strong advocate for the library.
    • Ability to prioritize workload with multiple demands and frequent interruptions.
