Position Purpose: The Forensic Nurse Examiner PRN will actively work within the community to foster safety and support for the client, family, and significant others, using client empowerment, and agency/ community resources through trauma-informed and culturally sensitive approaches. The Forensic Nurse will provide timely, non-judgmental, compassionate care to the victims of trauma and violence, to include but not limited to: Domestic Violence (Intimate Partner Violence), Child Abuse, Strangulation, Elder Abuse, Sexual Assault and Abuse. This will include a forensic exam, prophylaxis for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, photographic documentation, referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up, support and participation in legal proceedings. The Forensic Nurse is expected to follow protocols established by the Director of Open Heart Advocate and Chief Nursing Officer for the Forensic nurse Program for which the Forensic Nurse is employed.
Essential Functions and Basic Duties
Position Specific Performance Expectations:
- Ability to triage patient to determine if medical exam is needed before forensic exam.
- Coordinate care by all agencies involved in assisting the sexual assault victim and coordinate referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up as needed for each patient.
- Perform a complete physical and forensic evidence collection examination including Head-to-toe assessment for trauma, detailed genital examination, forensic specimen collection and documentation (including photography), and assess for mandatory reporting status, reporting when appropriate.
- Perform and document sexual assault and forensic interview accurately.
- Administer appropriate prophylactic medication per protocols.
- Perform all duties as required per Forensic Nursing Program protocols.
- Provide testimony as fact or expert witness for any/all cases performed while FNE and coordinate with attorneys during the judicial process. (Be aware that you may be called to testify in examinations that you have completed several years after leaving the forensic program).
- Commit to cover minimum number of shifts, holiday coverage and other scheduling requirements per Forensic Nursing Program protocol.
- Commit to working in the Forensic Nursing Program for a minimum of 1 year following the completion of training.
- Complete the initial FNE training and preceptor requirements as identified by the FNE program.
- Maintain Forensic Nursing competencies and participate in quality assurance projects, community education, and peer review as well as DVRT/SART meetings.
- Participates in professional development by attending staffing meetings, conferences, webinars, and other available trainings.
- Share individual expertise with other members of the Forensic Nursing Program.
- Debriefs as needed to maintain emotional and physical wellness.
- Coordinates Victim Right’s Act referrals and supports to patient/victim/client per HB21-1143.
- Inputs requested data sets into funder and organizational required systems in a timely manner.
- Takes appropriate steps to deal with emergency situations with the goals of maintaining the safety of all clients and staff.
- Engages with trauma informed practices to all populations and crises.
- Provides direct services to client and hot line when on duty and other times as requested. Hours may vary.
- Support the on-call schedule and fill in for shifts as needed/requested with a minimum of 7 days of coverage per month.
- Assists clients with court needs, court accompaniment, law enforcement interviews and making referrals to appropriate agencies and staff.
- Court accompaniment will be compensated at base hourly rate with call-back being compensated at time and a half.
- Maintains client privacy and confidentiality within the system of advocacy and performs mandatory reporting requirements.
- Ability to develop and implement clinical policies and procedures.
- Professional knowledge and technical ability to analyze, design, test and implement systems and applications.
- Demonstrates and independent work initiative, sound judgment and attention to detail.
- Attend relevant trainings as needed/requested.
- FNE PRNs will respond to victim service needs within one hour when on call.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Must be at least 21 years of age (21 for driving positions)
- Must be able to legally work in the United States
- Must be able to pass a background check
- Must be able to pass a drug screen and breath alcohol test (if applicable)
- Must complete employee health meeting
- Bilingual (Spanish) or other foreign language is preferred
Education/Licensure/Certification:
- Licensed with the Colorado Board of Nursing at the RN level or above
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited school of nursing
- SANE training completed by 6 months of hire
- Unencumbered License/Certification (if applicable)
Experience:
- Experience with IT systems and reports preferred.
- Experience leading and teaching individual and groups preferred.
- Local knowledge about and connections to community health care and social welfare resources is desirable.
