JOB SUMMARY
Assist the Store Production Supervisor and Store Manager in maintain productivity and meeting/exceeding daily production goals. Perform processor duties (processing donated items for sale), through a sequential process involving sorting, grading, pricing and invoicing. Perform Material Handler duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Lead Duties: Assist the Store Production Supervisor or Store Manager in the following: Establish and maintain efficient pace for goods processing; organize the department, ensuring a safe work environment; train new employees in procedures (including safety); train staff in procedure changes; monitor production quality and staff productivity standards, as directed by the manager; monitor product sales and direct product accordingly; serve as a resource to processors/handlers with procedures questions; give input, as requested, to the supervisor on employee performance; notify the supervisor of any conduct or performance problems; assist with development and communication of employee work schedules; perform basic supervisor duties in the absence of the supervisor.
Processor Duties: Following established guidelines and criteria, all or some of the steps are performed in the processing of donated goods: Sort and grade textile/clothing items by separating into predetermined classifications (e.g., men’s, women’s, children’s, and other textiles) and into quality level (retail store grade, Outlet grade, or salvage); hang men’s, women’s and children’s clothing which meet quality standards. Price items meeting quality standards by grouping textiles by value; sort and grade hard sort items by separating into predetermined classifications and into quality level (retail store grade, Outlet grade, or salvage); clean and grade items by removing surface dirt from glassware and small wares, placing incomplete and/or broken items into containers for Outlet sale or for trash; tag items meeting quality standards by affixing appropriate tags or labels to a group of priced items.
Material Handler Duties: Unload donations from trucks and trailers by removing materials and placing in designated areas; maintain records of offloaded materials; receive, move and place carts, containers and barrels containing donations for processing in designated areas; perform preliminary donation processing, including separating items into predetermined classifications and into goods saleable/unsaleable at the store.
SECONDARY DUTIES
May perform Donor services such as taking donations, documenting donation information and communicating with Donors.
Will perform duties related to daily sanitizing of store and donation locations.
May perform minor janitorial duties as required/assigned.
Store Lead Processors may need to perform related duties not listed on this job description.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
EDUCATION REQUIRED: High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED: None.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: One year experience as a processor or material handler, or equivalent.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED: Basic math ability. Familiarity with Goodwill Central Coast’s mission, general Company policies and procedures (this may be learned on-the-job). Familiarity with computers.
EQUIPMENT USED: Typical processing equipment; typical office equipment.
SKILLS/APTITUDES/TEMPERAMENTS:
Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing; ability to communicate in basic Spanish.
Ability to understand and accept directions, and follow procedures.
Ability to perform routine work, adapting to change as it relates to work flow without loss of efficiency.
Ability to maintain self-control and work in cooperation with co-workers.
Ability to coordinate eyes/hands/fingers to quickly and safety manipulate and handle items.
Ability to examine items and visually differentiate between them based on quality standards.
Ability to meet and maintain established production and quality standards, as communicated by the supervisor.
Ability to demonstrate satisfactory attendance, according to Goodwill Central Coast policy.
Ability to adhere to safe work practices as documented in Company safety policies; ability to report safety hazards/accidents promptly to supervisor or safety committee member.
EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
The work is routine with occasional periods of high activity/demand requiring little or no overtime to complete the work.
JOB SETTING
Work is performed in large enclosed warehouse area on an even concrete floor surface. The area is heated and has some natural ventilation. The temperature will fluctuate to some degree depending on location within the department. Dust and dirt is controlled by daily cleaning of the work area. Some of the materials handled may be soiled; these are disposed of following established procedures. Work is completed independently but in cooperation with whole department. There is contact with the public in the acceptance of donations. The noise volume is moderately high throughout the day depending on the amount of activity, equipment in operation and radio operation. Material handling equipment (forklift, hand truck, movable containers/racks) and trucks may be operated in or near work area.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work place is steady requiring consistently lifting and/or carrying of items up to 50 lbs. Heavier items (51 lbs or more) will be moved either with assistance from another person or by using appropriate material handling equipment.
Normal or corrected talking, hearing, and seeing abilities are sufficient to perform the required tasks.
Sufficient mobility is required to walk up/down ramps, climb in/out of trucks and walk on uneven ground.
