The City of Benicia is seeking a Librarian I/II to join their public services team in the Library. The public service team consists of full-time and part-time professionals and paraprofessionals at a single point of service at the library. The position also contributes to programming, collection development, policy development and implementation.
The Benicia Public Library is a stand-alone municipal library open 7 days a week, serving a community of approximately 30,000 residents and students. The current hours of operation for the public are Monday - Thursday 10:00 AM - 9:00 PM and Friday, Saturday & Sunday 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM. Currently the department hopes to secure two candidates, one that is available Tuesday through Saturday and one that is available Sunday through Thursday. The schedule is subject to change and will be based on the needs of the department.

Librarian I
Under general supervision, to perform library work; to assist in directing the City Library; and to perform related duties as required.
The incumbent in this position serves under the direction of the Library Director and must possess sound knowledge of the principles, practices and philosophy of public library work. This position has responsibility for using independent judgement, organization and administrative skills. The position requires working with the public of all ages, answering their library needs. The position will be given a specific area to develop, such as Children's or Reference Services, to include a program of service and collection of appropriate materials.
Librarian II
Under general supervision, to perform library work; to assist in directing the City Library; and to perform related duties as required.
The incumbent in this position serves under the supervision of the Library Director and must possess sound knowledge of the principles, practices and philosophy of public library work. This position has responsibility for using independent judgement, organization and administrative skills. All Public Service Librarian I duties are also part of the Librarian II duties.
In addition, the Public Services Librarian II has managerial responsibilities and will serve as the Acting Library Director as assigned. Additional duties may be required that place the Public Services Librarian II in a supervisorial position in over Public Services Librarian I's and other library staff, including scheduling of work, ability to assign work assignments and handling of patron complaints beyond the first level.Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provides reader and reference advisory service; answers reference questions, using reference and circulating collection.
- Plans, organizes, publicizes and directs programs for a specific target group, ie. children or young adults.
- Coordinates the acquisition, cataloging, classification, circulation, distribution, weeding, care and preservation of library materials for a specific area of concern.
- Participates in selecting books, audio visual materials and other materials for inclusion in collection and develops programs to stimulate reader interest.
- Performs original and copy cataloging on the OCLC bibliographic utility.
- Budgets the funds needed for their assigned area.
- Market the collection in assigned area of concern
- Prepare reading lists and bibliographies
- Create specialized files and indexes as needed (ie. local documents files, collected biographies index, etc.).
- Create and present programs for assigned area, including booktalking, storytelling, etc.
- May be responsible for outreach into the community (class visits, talks to a service club. etc.).
- May be assigned as Library liaison to an outside organization.
- Assists in the development of Library goals, objectives, policies and procedures.
- Responds to citizen complaints and inquiries, serves on professional boards and committees and other job related meetings.
- Perform related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS - LIBRARIAN II:
- Acts as Library Director in his/her absence.
- Supervises, trains and evaluates assigned staff.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Public Services Librarian I/II:
- Principles and practices of organization, administration, budgeting, personnel management and supervisory techniques.
- Computers - both library specific software & general pc operations
Knowledge of:
- General knowledge of the principles, practices and philosophy of public library work.
- Library classification, cataloging, circulation, distribution, reference techniques and practices, book selection and programming.
Ability to:
- Plan, organize, direct and coordinate the activities of a library system.
- Represent the library in a public relations capacity.
- Analyze and respond to community needs and requests.
- Develop and conduct special programs.
- Communicate effectively with all age levels.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co workers, the general public and other City staff.
- Spanish speaking skills and knowledge of specific library computer applications are desirable qualifications.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to acquire the knowledge and abilities would be:

- Graduation from an accredited Graduate School of Librarianship with a Master's degree in Library Science or the equivalent.
Experience:
Librarian I
Librarian II:
- Experience as a librarian in a library setting for at least two years with duties including selection of materials, answering reference questions from a public reference desk, and being "in charge" during times when the Library Director is not there. Typically, two years at the Benicia Public Library as a Public Services Librarian I would qualify for promotion to Librarian II.
