Paralegal assists and supports attorneys with research and document preparation for court proceedings and legal transactions. Utilizes a variety of sources such as statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, and legal codes to research and analyze legal topics. Being a Paralegal drafts and edits legal documents such as briefs, pleadings, motions, and contracts. Conducts fact-finding, data collection, and analysis used to prepare statements and arguments. Additionally, Paralegal assists attorneys with depositions, interviews, discovery, and investigations. Manages, organizes, and archives documents with software tools and technology. Position Summary
The Jefferson County Attorney's Office, Child Support Division is seeking a skilled paralegal to draft legal motions, meet with parents and/or guardians during Family Court domestic violence and dependency dockets and motion hours to establish paternity and to set or modify child support orders in IV-D cases, and to assist with the clerical duties of the satellite office.
Essential Functions
-Attend court hearings to assist with establishing paternity and child support orders.
-Maintain a working knowledge of domestic relations law.
-Draft motions.
-Assist the attorneys from the Child Support Division, defense attorneys and judges as necessary.
-Respond to requests from judges and their staff.
-Facilitate information regarding case actions between the Satellite Office and the Child Support Division.
-Updates and maintains pertinent information on the Child Support System
-Scan and index court calendars
-Answers calls from customers and attorneys to refer cases for appropriate action
-Perform others duties as assigned
-Regular attendance mandatory
Minimum Requirements
KNOWLEDGE: Basic knowledge of child support services and public assistance programs required as well as knowledge of Domestic Relations Law and the Jefferson County Family Court system. Computer experience mandatory.
SKILLS/ABILITIES: Must be a mature individual with initiative and drive. Must have the ability to work with the public in a professional manner with respect, patience and understanding. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required. The ideal candidate exhibits the ability to follow direction from others and follow through with appropriate information or action when requested. Must be conscientious, detail oriented and reliable. Must work well both independently and in a “team” environment.
EDUCATION: High School diploma or its equivalent supplemented by completion of Associate or Bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies. Kentucky Paralegal Association Certification preferred.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS AND/OR PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position is located at Jefferson County Attorney’s Office, Child Support Division, 1930 Bishop Lane, Suite 100, Louisville, Ky. 40218. Work is performed in an office setting. Office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Daily use of computers. Mobility within the office, including movement from floor to floor and personal interaction with employees in the office, attorneys, clerks and Judges. Duties may require pulling files, carrying files, transporting files and may require walking from Judicial Center to Child Support Division, 315 West Muhammad Ali. Blvd.
Salary: $39,506.74 per annum (Funding is in whole or in part from federal, CHFS, or other state funds.)
