    SUMMARY/PURPOSE OF JOB


    This position is responsible for surveillance and improvement of the pharmacy's procurement processes for pharmaceuticals. This includes review of the pharmacy's procurement order, placing orders for the pharmacy to approved vendors, preparing pharmacy purchasing reports, communicating with the pharmacy staff on purchasing issues, sourcing of products when primary items are not available, auditing invoice date for accuracy and other designated pharmacy functions. The pharmacy buyer will also be performing designated tasks and duties relative to purchasing any supplies needed by the pharmacy, updating all drug prices in the pharmacy formulary manager, process and maintain all invoices including all electronic controlled substance invoices. The pharmacy buyer will also need to be knowledgeable and ensure compliance with the new Drug Supply Chain Security Act requirements effective November 2015.


    The buyer will need to perform basic pharmacy operation duties which includes but not limited to prepackaging unit dose preparations, Pyxis refilling and management, medication outdate inspections, stocking nutrition supplements and tube feedings and front counter duties as needed.

    Understands and exhibits the principals of service excellence, leads by example, and mentors' others in the performance of their assigned duties. Additionally, understands that every employee is responsible for exhibiting exceptional customer service by answering call lights on the nursing unit and if not able to assist personally, will inform the appropriate employee regarding the patient's need.

    Understands the role of employee's individual position regarding HIPAA requirements and level of access to Protected Health Information as defined in HIPAA hospital-wide policies

    Understands that it is the responsibility of every RHI staff member to provide patient safety as a priority response according to RHI evidence-based practices. Encourages patients to be actively involved in their own care as patient safety strategy.


    JOB DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


    • Maintain appropriate pharmacy inventory through optimal purchasing requirements.
    • Inform pharmacists when backorders occur and recommend back up plan.
    • Internal control on price changes and resolving price discrepancies.
    • Perform pharmacy invoice price audits.
    • Perform pharmacy purchasing cost analysis.
    • Handle process for return /destruction of all expired/recalled pharmacy products
    • Monitor new releases (contract or generic) and report to the Pharmacy Operations coordinator or Director of Pharmacy. Be familiar with all pharmacies in the area to contact in times of shortage or drug procurement of non-stocked items. Know how to call courier to obtain drug supply needed.
    • Refills Pyxis and checks for all outdates according to written departmental work standards. Delivers all bulk medications not loaded in Pyxis and return unused or discharged patient's meds back to the pharmacy.
    • Updates Cerner formulary with new items and price changes on items that are ordered from suppliers (Masters and Cardinal Health). Maintain bar code scanning for all medications within the hospital. Charge and credit patient's medications in Cerner.
    • Cleans own work area and maintains cleanliness of areas and unit dose machine as assigned by supervisor. Restocks code carts and outpatient areas as assigned. Does monthly outdate checks on all code carts and maintain accurate records of this process. Do daily unit checks to ensure that meds are not left out on the unit and have patient names and expiration dates when required.
    • Performs courier tasks to include deliveries of medication into Pyxis and supplies to patient care areas to ensure continued patient care. Performs up-front counter tasks to include answering telephone and routing call or taking accurate messages and attending to customers at counter.
    • Credits returned medications, stores reusable merchandise on shelves, and destroys all unusable items. Ensures that the Monthly Refrigerator Log are up to date. Performs all prepackaging tasks including preparing labels, obtaining medications, and recording lot numbers, prepackaging medications manually or with machine, and performing basic and routine compounding procedures following department protocol under direction of pharmacist.
    • Participates in continuous quality improvement activities and observes measures to ensure Hospital, Joint Commission, CARF and other quality standards and regulations are met.
    • Uses appropriate technique in performing duties to avoid or minimize accidents and injury related to unsafe practice. Proactively seeks information and resources, including the Environment of Care Manual, to aid in safe performance of duties to contribute to the RHI culture of safety.

    QUALIFICATIONS


    Requires knowledge of and familiarity with medical and drug terminology, drug products, location of stock and supplies, etc. Requires knowledge of procedures for pre-packaging machine and maintaining necessary records. Requires knowledge of procedures for writing credits for returned medication and location of stock. Requires knowledge of procedures for taking inventory; and maintaining narcotic records, prescriptions, etc. Requires the ability to interpret drug orders for Pyxis interface and knowledge of procedures for filling Pyxis. Bilingual capability

    (Spanish/English) strongly preferred.


    EXPERIENCE


    Pharmacy buyer experience preferred. Position requires the utilize computer systems.

    • Valid Indiana Pharmacy Technician License
    • National certification required upon hire or within 12 months of hire date

    EDUCATION


    Position requires high school diploma or equivalent. Pharmacy buyer classes/certification preferred.
