Typically reports to a chief of police or police captain. The Police Lieutenant typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Fire Inspector (Lieutenant)

  • To conduct fire inspections, to provide fire prevention and fire safety education for the general public, to assist in plan reviews and fire cause determination within the guidelines of departmental standard operating procedures and Life Safety, Building, and National Fire Prevention Association codes.
    • Conducts code enforcement activities: investigates complaints of unsafe conditions of construction or occupancy or other complaints; identifies code violations and determines required corrective action; meets with property owners, business owners and other individuals to discuss violations; issues code compliance notices and official correction notices to inform violators of discrepancies and compliance deadlines; testifies in court as needed; and performs follow-up site inspections as needed.  Interprets various laws, ordinances, and regulations in enforcing safety regulations and fire prevention codes in accordance with national, state and Consolidated Government standards.
    • Conducts fire safety programs, classes, visual displays and assists the public with questions on fire safety.
    • Conducts pre-construction meetings regarding plans review and proposed structures: provides assistance and advice regarding fire and life safety codes compliance in final construction.  Assist with plan review and issuing of certificate of occupancies.
    • Advises and instructs owners and occupants of buildings in fire prevention methods and the removal of fire hazards and makes recommendations for reducing potential hazards.
    • Conducts routine and complex field inspections to ensure compliance with all adopted codes and ordinances of the Consolidated Government including standard building, Life Safety, and National Fire Codes: conducts inspections of buildings, alarms, detection and suppression systems, electrical framing, heating ventilation, air conditioning, gas/fuel, water availability, and other inspections as required or requested and maintains related documentation.
    • May perform the functions of a firefighter in support of the department's objective and mission as directed and may respond to emergency scenes.
    POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Conducts fire safety education
    • Assists with blueprint review
    • May supervise and/or train designated subordinate department personnel
    Education: High School Diploma or GED.

    Experience:  Serving as a current Augusta Fire Department Sergeant, with six (6) years of fire service experience or ten (10) years of experience performing life safety/fire inspections of commercial buildings for a government agency with three (3) years as a Sergeant preferred.

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: 
    • Considerable knowledge of building construction, inspection methods, fire hazards, principles, and techniques of fire suppression and prevention.
    • Proficiency in fire codes, department operating procedures, building codes, city ordinances, code and fire law enforcement, and interpreting building plans.
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
    • Ability to train designated subordinate department personnel. 
    • Excellent communication skills both written and oral.
    • Strong supervisory skills.
    • Strong people skills.
    • Mastery of operating standard office equipment and computer skills.
    Licensing/Certification:  
    • Possession of a valid driver's license with good driving history.  If State license is other than Georgia or South Carolina, applicant must obtain a license in Georgia or South Carolina within 30 days of employment. 
    • Possess or have ability to obtain a valid state operator/driver's license for the type vehicle or equipment operated.
    • Must obtain CPR, NPQ Fire Inspector I or ICC Fire Inspector I and NPQ Fire Instructor I within one (1) year of hire date. 
    • Possess or have ability to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association and the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Act.
    This position does require staff call up in an emergency situation.
    This position does require travel to other locations more than 50% of the time.

Possess or have the ability to meet current fitness requirements set forth by NFPA 1582.

    • Environmental Factors:  Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, fire, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, or bright/dim lights.
