The Police Officer is responsible for responding to calls, taking necessary action at the scene of crime or disturbance, conducting investigations, making arrests, testifying in court, and completing reports/forms and routine paperwork. Responsible for patrolling an assigned area to prevent and discover crime and to enforce regulations. Being a Police Officer typically reports to a Police Sergeant. Requires an associate's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 12 to 18 months of law enforcement experience. The Emporia Police Department is looking for individuals looking to “be the change” in our community. Law enforcement is a fast-paced and exciting career field. It requires someone to be able to work on their own and in a team environment. We are looking for new recruits or lateral transfers. The position of police officer performs duties in the protection of life and property and the preservation of order in the City of Emporia. This position enforces all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances and assists with investigations. Patrol duties include enforcing traffic laws, investigation of crimes and accidents, and providing public assistance. This employee will be required to exercise initiative and discretion when faced with emergency situations.
As a police officer recruit the starting pay will be $21.84 per hour. After one year of service, the pay increases to $26.21 per hour. Lateral Transfers are welcome with starting pay depending on experience.
· Patrol Officer pay range - $26.21 to $41.43 per hour.
· Master Police Officer after 8 years of law enforcement experience. Lateral transfer years of service will count towards Master Police Officer.
· Master Police Officer pay range – $33.47 to $52.90 per hour.
· Lateral transfer pay is based on experience.
· 12-hour shifts with a built-in 4 hours of overtime per pay period.
· Associate’s Degree adds $.50 per hour to pay.
· Bachelor’s Degree adds $1 per hour to pay.
· Spanish bi-lingual adds $1 per hour to pay.
