Professor - Drama teaches courses in the discipline area of drama and theater arts. Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensures student engagement. Being a Professor - Drama provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Professor - Drama typically reports to a department head. Requires a PhD or terminal degree appropriate to the field. Has considerable experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels and initiates research and case studies in field of interest and may publish findings in trade journals or textbooks. Provides intellectual leadership and has made significant contributions to the field. May offer independent study opportunities and mentoring to students.     Our mission at the Town of Cary is to focus every day on enriching the lives of our citizens by creating an exceptional environment and providing exemplary services that enable our community to thrive and prosper. Under the direction of the Performing Arts Education Specialist, the Drama Instructor will teach a variety of theatre-related disciplines to youth ages 2-18 in an ensemble-based, process-oriented environment. 
     
    This position requires a flexible schedule to work varying hours. Daytime availability is required and some evenings, weekends and occasional holidays as needed.
     
    This is a part-time, non-benefited, year-round position, up to 20 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours per year.

    • Design and implement curriculum in creative drama, acting, text analysis, performance, characterization, improv, devised theatre, musical theatre and voice, audition techniques, movement, and others to students of all skill levels
    • Direct, choreograph, and stage theatrical productions including auditions, rehearsals, and production process
    • Design theatre programs and lesson plans for youth participants
    • Collaborate with other staff on special projects
    • Prepare, teach and evaluate assigned instructional courses
    • Implement new teaching strategies as appropriate
    • Maintain accurate records of students' attendance and performance
    • Submit reports in an accurate and timely manner
    • Adhere to/enforce policies and procedures
    • Keep students advised of their progress in class
    • Perform other job-related tasks as required.
    • General knowledge of theatre performance styles, classroom management, and educational theatre 
    • Strong organizational skills
    • Ability to communicate effectively and promptly both verbally and in writing
    • Ability to work effectively and professionally with students and staff
    • Ability to use teaching methods that engage students and encourage them. 
    Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in Theatre, Theatre for Youth, Theatre Education, Musical Theatre or a related field AND a minimum of 1 year of experience teaching youth theatre.  
     
    Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following:
    •  A master’s degree in Directing, Theatre for Youth, Theatre or related performing arts field. 
    • Some experience teaching Pre-K and elementary aged students theatre. 
    • Some experience in acting/performance, directing, theatre production, stage management, technical theatre, dance education and choreography
    Physical Requirements 
    Work in this class requires an employee to be able to hear and talk in order to communicate with the public and with groups under instruction.  An employee must be able to climb, walk unassisted and move about freely in order to interact with patrons. Requires the ability to lift moderately heavy items (up to 25 lbs.) Visual acuity is needed to read typewritten and handwritten materials and to view a computer terminal. Work in this class may require sitting and use of a computer.
