Professor - Special Education teaches courses in the discipline area of special education. Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensures student engagement. Being a Professor - Special Education provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Professor - Special Education typically reports to a department head. Requires a PhD or terminal degree appropriate to the field. Has considerable experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels and initiates research and case studies in field of interest and may publish findings in trade journals or textbooks. Provides intellectual leadership and has made significant contributions to the field. May offer independent study opportunities and mentoring to students. Outline of Responsibilities
Director of Special Education
Instructional Leadership & Programming
Collaboratively lead K-12 Special Education and Related Services. This includes but is not limited to the following:
• Advocating for the needs of students with disabilities (SWDs)
• Promoting the responsible inclusion of SWDs in the least restrictive environment with appropriate supports
• Collaboratively advancing a vision of inclusion, equity, and excellence for SWDs
• Overseeing IEP and 504 Plan Development
• Chairing CSE meetings
• Representing the district in due process hearings
• Leading manifestation meetings, informal parent conferences, mediations, etc.
• Making appropriate educational arrangements for hard-to-place students
• Managing adaptive technology (in collaboration with the Administrator for Managed Technology Services)
• Coordinating “Extended School Year” services
• Recommending appropriate special education services and accommodations consistent with New York State special education regulations.
• Providing professional learning experiences related to special education and related services (in collaboration with the Directors of Instruction, the principals, and the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction [ASI])
• Collaborating with school counselors, social workers, and other administrators to ensure that the mental health and social-emotional needs of SWDs are met.
• Collaborating with the Directors of Instruction and ASI to ensure the district’s Comprehensive Student Support Plan (including Response to Intervention) meets the needs of SWDs and facilitates their accurate identification.
• Regularly updating the district’s “Special Education Handbook”
• Coordinating targeted interventions and/or corrective action plans related to SWDs, special education and/or related services. • Serving as the District’s point of contact for the “Cleartrack” data system
• Completing all district reporting, grant writing, etc. concerning special education and related services.
• Regularly briefing the ASI on developments in special education and related services
• Regularly briefing the Board of the Education in executive session
Budgeting & Fiscal Management
Oversee the following Instructional Programs:
• Coordinating out-of-district placements for Students with Disabilities (including BOCES services)
• Managing BOCES utilization
• Making staffing recommendations to the cabinet
• Tracking and anticipating long-term trends in staffing and budgeting for special education and related services 5/2/23
• Managing Medicaid compliance procedures
Supervision & Evaluation
Supervising and/or evaluating the following staff:
• Assistant Director of Special Education
• CSE Chairperson
• Special Education Office Clerical Staff
• Psychologists (co-supervised & evaluated with building principals)
• Speech Teachers, Occupational Therapists, and Physical Therapists (in collaboration with the building principals)
• Special education teachers (including formal and informal observations for about 10 teachers)
Committee & Departmental Work
Facilitating and serving on a variety of standing and ad hoc committees including:
• Chairing Committee for Special Education (CSE) Meetings
• Chairing the District Special Education Steering Committee
• Facilitating special education department meetings, psychologist meetings, related service provider meetings, etc.
• Chairing other ad hoc committees as needed
• Participating on other district- and building-level committees as needed
• Actively participating in regional meetings related to special education.
Other Duties
Both State and federal guidance frequently changes, as do local district needs. The Director of Special Education needs to be able to flexibly adapt to these changes. Consequently, the duties outlined above may evolve or disappear, while other related duties may be assigned by the Superintendent, Deputy Superintendent, or Assistant Superintendent
