Full-Time, Non-Union, Exempt Position
40 hours per week
Monday through Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm
$55,000.00-$70,000.00 annually
BASIC FUNCTION OF ACCOUNTANT:
- Oversees all accounting related to the general ledger.
- Prepares financial reporting including internal management reporting, compliance reporting and year end financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. Ensures all timelines are met.
- Performs technical research and analysis on a wide range of complex accounting and finance matters.
- Assists the Controller and Chief Financial Officer in year-end audit process for New Opportunities and affiliated companies.
- Directs monthly Board Report financial process.
- Maintains fiscal policies and procedures to ensure adherence to Agency approval and authority guidelines.
- Monitors financial systems and controls to protect Agency assets and exposure.
- Recommends business process redesign on accounting and financial workflow to improve productivity and quality in accordance with generally accepted accounting procedures.
- Works with internal management and grantors to establish fiscal parameters and processes to support service programs.
- Assists the Chief Financial Officer and Controller with financial and accounting operations, including internal and external financial reporting and administrative controls.
- Recommends business process redesign on accounting and financial workflow to increase fiscal effectiveness.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF ACCOUNTANT:
- Provides functional direction to Fiscal Department staff members.
- Pursues personal professional development in accounting and systems technology.
- Verifies, allocates, posts and reconciles transactions.
- Produces accounting reports with goal of zero errors.
- Analyzes financial information and summarizes financial status in conjunction with Controller and/or CFO.
- Provides technical support and advice; interfaces with internal management and external funding representatives.
- Reviews and recommends modifications to accounting systems and procedures.
- Documents policies and procedures to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
- Participates in financial standards setting and forecast process, working with Controller and CFO.
- Provides input into departmental goal setting.
- Prepares monthly, quarterly and yearly financial statements; active in creation of New Opportunities annual budget.
- Participates in internal and external audits to ensure compliance.
- Coordinates with the Controller to assist in review of staff activities and work product.
Requirements
REQUIREMENTS OF ACCOUNTANT:
Education:
4 year degree in Accounting /Finance, or Masters in Business Administration with Accounting concentration.
Experience:
- 5 plus years accounting and data systems experience, preferably in a non-profit environment.
- 3 plus years supervisory experience preferred.
Job Skills:
- Solid accounting and financial management skills, based on generally accepted accounting principles.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- High degree of accuracy and attention to detail required.
- Ability to multi-task and meet established time frames and accounting schedules.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Organizational, recordkeeping and reporting skills.
- Strong computer skills, including excel, word and financial systems (Paylocity, BlackBaud).
- Cultural competence and ability to work with diverse populations.
- Proven senior accounting experience.
- Thorough knowledge of basic accounting procedures and principles.
- Awareness of business trends.
- Experience with creating financial statements.
- Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year end close process.
- Excellent accounting software user and administration skills.
- Aptitude for numbers and quantitative skills.
Licenses /certifications:
CPA preferred, but not required.
