    Job Description

    JOB SUMMARY

    Under the Supervision of the Recreation and Community Inclusion Coordinator, the Recreation Leader will perform duties pertaining to the operations of the Recreation Programs and working with vulnerable populations, including the safety and welfare of and for the public. An employee of this class may be required to perform a variety of administrative and record keeping duties and has extensive public contact. They may also be required to do janitorial work, set up and take down related to the operation of the Recreation Programs.

    KEY FUNCTIONS/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

    • Experience in leading and/or instructing the following:
      • Recreation Games and Activities (Indoor and/or outdoor)
      • Performing and/or Visual Arts
      • Sports; Outdoor Recreation; Team building
      • Youth development training or experience working with youth
    • The habitual and judicious use of communications, knowledge, technical skills, reasoning, emotions, values, and reflections daily for the benefit of those being served.
    • Facilitate the movement of a group toward a common goal in a fun and inspirational way.
    • Ability to generate ideas quickly, alternatives, or possibilities that may be useful in solving problems, communicating with others and entertaining others.
    • Facilitate learning skills through fun and action, a person-centered approach, handle difficulties with others effectively, encourage, praise, and recognize successes, and adapt or modify for different skill sets and ability levels.

    Education and Experience

    High school graduation or GED plus one year of experience.

    Requires minimum One (1) yr. experience in sports and recreation activities.

    Special Certifications and License

    Certifications: American Red Cross First Aid & Safety Community CPR or CPR for the Professional.

    Valid Texas Driver’s License.

    Independence and Judgement

    Average judgment; must recognize and resolve problems such as bad grammar, type of procedure to apply, where to refer call or correspondence without specified destination, whether there is a problem/malfunction with a piece of equipment that needs attention, etc.; may involve freedom in selection of work methods among approved routines, setting of priorities, or sequencing of tasks within established schedules.

    Initiative and Ingenuity

    Low chance for error because work is routine/repetitive/simple/reviewed carefully; standard procedures: don't have to come up with creative solutions; refers anything unusual to supervisor.

    Does not supervise.

    Level and Frequency of Outside Contacts

    Frequent contact with the public or other organizations; interactions may require obtaining cooperation of people; courtesy and tact are required when dealing with moderately difficult or sensitive issues.

    Physical Demands

    Light physical effort; may require brief periods of heavy muscular exertion, such as standing, lifting, moving, pulling, pushing, etc. Ability to exert up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally or a negligible amount of energy frequently to lift, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

    Responsibility for Equipment and Property

    Responsible for assigned equipment/property used outside of office; responsible for handing out to and retrieving property/equipment from employees and keeping inventory: Use of City Vehicle.

    Working Conditions

    Fair inside or outside conditions; exposure to disagreeable conditions is brief or otherwise insignificant; space problems; only occasional situations that place the employee in a stressful environment.

    Other Requirements
