  • Position Objective: Provide services as a Researcher in support of the overall functions of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). To perform laboratory techniques relating to scientific research.

     

     

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Perform laboratory techniques relating to scientific research. 1
    • Knowledge in in vitro and in vivo studies, including cell culture and maintenance of cell lines, Western blotting, immunofluorescence/immunohistochemistry, cell free assays (e.g. ELISA). 2
    • Handling research animals confidently including tumor inoculation, animal sedation/euthanasia, intravenous and intraperitoneal injection, bleeding, imaging studies and harvesting organs for biodistribution. 3
    • Knowledge of flow cytometry.
    • Works safely with radioactive agents both in vitro and in animals. Process and organize multiple samples simultaneously.
    • Ensure that all specimens and equipment necessary for experiments are available and in good order.
    • Performs sample management and storage to (1) store new samples, update database, retrieve samples with proper authorization; and (2) maintain inventory system and sample storage according to outlined guidelines.
    • Analyzes, documents and reports on all procedures performed to (1) convey and discuss research results with team lab members; (2) update and maintain written laboratory record of the work; and (3) collect and enter research data into laboratory notebooks and databases.
    • Cleans and sterilizes instruments, glassware and equipment by (1) working with staff to cover glassware washing, media preparation, and autoclaving; and (2) ensures that adequate clean inventory is available for immediate usage.
    • Operates laboratory machines and instruments; and prepares specimens and equipment for use. Prepare materials and equipment for experiments as directed.
    • Performs routine equipment maintenance by (1) monitoring equipment performance and maintenance schedules; (2) performing preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment; (3) working with other lab staff to schedule liquid waste container pickup; and (4) properly dispose MPW and sharps boxes when ¾ full.
    • Maintains inventory of laboratory supplies and initiates purchase orders to (1) ensure that supplies and consumables are ready and on hand as necessary for maximum efficiency in the laboratory; (2) ensure that reagents are made correctly and that expired reagents or defective products are replaced to ensure validity of results; and (3) order and maintain laboratory supplies, reagents and equipment.
    • Upon request, the contractor shall provide documentation evidence of any and/or all work product, including, but not limited to, the following task: Work products and documents related to executing, and arranging experiments, new techniques, and procedures. - Ad-Hoc
    • Upon request, the contractor shall provide documentation evidence of any and/or all work product, including, but not limited to, the following task: Work products and documents related operating laboratory machines and instruments, and preparing specimens and equipment for use; and performing routine and advanced equipment maintenance. - Ad-Hoc
    • Upon request, the contractor shall provide documentation evidence of any and/or all work product, including, but not limited to, the following task: Work products and documents related to analyzing, documenting, and reporting on all procedures performed; training staff in performing routine laboratory tests and procedures; and providing insights and expertise and recommending new strategies and approaches. - Ad-Hoc
    • Upon request, the contractor shall provide documentation evidence of any and/or all work product, including, but not limited to, the following task: Work products and documents related to performing sample management and storage; maintaining inventory of laboratory supplies and initiating purchase orders; and cleans and sterilizes instruments, glassware, and equipment. - Ad-Hoc
    • Upon request, the contractor shall provide documentation evidence of any and/or all work product, including, but not limited to, the following task: Work products and documents related to performing routine equipment maintenance. - Ad-Hoc

     

    Basic Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Biology.
    • Skilled in Outlook.
    • Required minimum of 2 years of continuous lab experience.
    • Required molecular biology experience including cell culture, western blot, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, and RNA/DNA extraction and analysis.

     

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Master’s degree in Biology or a related field is preferred.
    • 3 or more years of lab experience preferred.
    • Preferred experience working with trainees and other technicians in the lab.
    • Preferred experience in lab supply ordering and equipment maintenance.
    • Preferred experience with the preparation of samples such as tumors and other organs for IHC, flow cytometry.
    • Preferred experience with rodent models including handling IV, IP injections and longitudinal imaging and therapy studies.
    • Preferred experience in tumor inoculation. The orthotopic model technique would be a plus.
    • Preferred experience in biodistribution studies.
    • Required strong oral and written communication skills.
    • Required proactively and respectfully communicate and work highly effectively within and between teams.
    • Required outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail.
    • Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
