  • Under administrative direction, the research analyst will conduct quantitative and qualitative social science research on a broad range of policy areas like workforce retention and recruitment, education, and/or livability policy areas such as energy, air quality, and health. This role requires excellent communication skills, the ability to conduct primary and secondary research, as well as the ability to interface with clients, funders, policymakers, and key stakeholders. The desired candidate will have strong public speaking skills and the ability to handle media inquiries and present at public forums. The research analyst must have strong interpersonal skills, manage complex timelines, meet all project deadlines, and ensure that project expenditures align with the project budget. Staff positions cannot receive visa sponsorship.

    Essential Duties

    • Design, coordinate, and conduct research in one or more of Morrison Institute’s focal areas of education, governance, changing demographics, livability, and human services.
    • Experience compiling data from various sources (government agencies, libraries, the internet, non-profit research organizations, etc.) and cleaning/managing large data sets conducting descriptive and inferential statistics (e.g., t-tests, ANOVA, Regression, Chi-Square)
    • Experience with Survey design and implementation (e.g., sampling strategies, margin of error, using weights, etc.)
    • Implement research qualitative methodologies including conducting key informant interviews, leading focus groups, and synthesizing key findings.
    • Write research-based reports, briefs, and blogs that effectively communicate data and policy options to target audiences and the general public with minimal supervision and editing.
    • Provide editing assistance for research products in preparation for publication.
    • Develop rapport and credibility with funders, academic and industry partners, and policymakers to best facilitate substantive partnerships.
    • Prioritize tasks to manage and meet deadlines, including assisting with organizational, scheduling, and logistical needs for research activities.
    • Provide input on the selection and hiring of interns.
    • Potential supervision and mentorship of interns

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in a related field AND three years of experience in research, information analysis or program evaluation; OR, Master's degree in a related field AND one year of experience in research, information analysis or program evaluation; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

    • Evidence of a Master’s degree in related policy or social science field
    • Demonstrated knowledge of research design and methodologies (both qualitative and quantitative)
    • Experience conducting public policy or applied social science research
    • Experience with designing and implementing program evaluations
    • Bilingual: Spanish/English (both oral and written)
    • Demonstrated knowledge of library and online research resources
    • Experience in reviewing and synthesizing current literature and best practices
    • Experience writing and editing for a variety of audiences
    • Experience translating complex concepts and data for a broad readership
    • Evidence of public speaking skills
    • Experience in planning and coordinating research activities and setting priorities to meet deadlines
    • Experience with statistical analysis software (such as SPSS, SAS, STATA, R, etc.) and documenting data processing through syntax
    • Experience developing and analyzing survey instruments
    • Experience conducting interviews and/or focus groups
    • Experience writing final reports to funders

    Working Environment

    • Activities are generally performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse (60% ); frequently required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work(40%); occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds (5%); regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities.
    • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
    • May be required to travel between buildings at the Downtown campus, which requires walking moderate distances.
    • Use of calculator, telephone, computer (monitor, keyboard and mouse), printer, fax and copier.
