Traffic Clerk provides administrative and clerical support to the traffic operations function of an organization. Responsible for all aspects of routing, shipping, logging, and tracking of inbound and outbound orders. Being a Traffic Clerk contacts transporters for freight pick-up and ensures that cargo is routed appropriately. Communicates changes to routing and timelines. Additionally, Traffic Clerk prepares and processes bills of lading (BOL) and other shipping documentation. Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Traffic Clerk works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline.     Position Overview

    The Traffic Signal Technician Level I performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the installation, maintenance and repair of signalized intersections, intelligent transportation systems and street lighting equipment in the Traffic, Signals, & Safety Division of the Department of Public Works.

    Essential Job Functions

    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, May include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

    • Performs the construction and maintenance of the City's traffic signals and street lights by installing underground conduit; constructing foundations; and installing poles, mast arms and traffic signal equipment.

    • Installs electrical conductors and makes electrical connections.

    • Performs routine maintenance by changing bulbs, cleaning lenses and reflectors, and inspecting components; responds to trouble calls and troubleshoots traffic signal control systems; fabricates and installs electrical services, installs vehicle and pedestrian detection systems.

    • Paints traffic control hardware; checks light output and alignment of signal heads; and may revamp or modernize existing intersections by installing new equipment while existing signals are still in operation.

    • Operates jackhammers, lift trucks, concrete saws, hoists, cranes, auger truck and bucket trucks to name a few.

    • Must be able to work effectively as a team with City staff as well with tact and diplomacy with our Citizens.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

    • Considerable knowledge of the principles of electrical, electro-mechanical and electronics work as related to the operation, maintenance and repair of traffic signals or similar devices.

    • Ability to diagnose and repair malfunctions in traffic signals and related appurtenances.

    • Ability to work from moderate heights and to work outdoors for extended periods, occasionally under adverse weather conditions.

    • Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions associated with electricity.

    • Knowledge of microprocessor based electronic equipment and there operation.

    • Skilled in the use and care of the tools, equipment and materials employed in the work.

    Education and Experience

    Must be a High School graduate or have a GED equivalent, and have a minimum 2 years construction experience in working in the electrical field. Completed vocational training is highly recommended.

    Complete and pass Level I Traffic Signal Technician course and examination conducted by International Municipal Signal Association.

    Required Licenses or Certificates

    • Individuals in this classification must possess a valid Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsement with no major driving citations within the past 39 months at the time of hire or promotion date.

    • As a condition of continued employment, an individual in this classification must maintain a valid CDL with appropriate endorsements and is subject to random, unannounced drug and alcohol testing to comply with the Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations 49 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 382.

    • Individuals in this classification must have I.M.S.A. Traffic Signal Technician Level I Certification.

    • Other pertinent licenses and/or certifications may be required of some positions depending on Department or Division assignment.

    Physical requirements include occasional lifting/carrying of 50 pounds; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate equipment. Subject to sitting, standing, reaching, walking, twisting and kneeling to perform the essential functions. Working conditions are both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
